Garrett Richter (born August 1 1950) is a Republican politician from Florida. He was a member of the Florida Senate from 2008 until 2016, and represented parts of Collier and Lee Counties in Southwest Florida. Before being elected as a member of Senate, Senate, Richter served one term in the Florida House of Representatives, serving in a district that was based in Naples from 2006 until 2008.

In 2008, the incumbent State Senator Burt Saunders was unable to run for re- election due the limitations on his term, and instead chose to start an electoral campaign in Congress against Representative Connie Mack IV. Richter was a candidate to succeed him within the district of 37th which encompassed Cape Coral and Fort Myers in Collier and Lee Counties. He was unopposed both in the Republican primary and general election. He the first time he won, he was without a fight.

When the state’s legislative districts were redrawn in 2012, Richter opted to run for re-election in the 23rd District, which contained much of the territory that he had previously represented. As was the case in 2008, Richter did not face an opponent in the primary or general elections and was re- elected without opposition. Upon being re-elected, Richter noted, “I’m looking forward to continuing my service to the Legislature by advancing sound fiscal policy and continuing to support Governor Scott’s agenda for economic growth and private sector job growth.”

Following Richter’s election to the House, he initially started campaigning to be Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives for the 2012-2014 legislative term, but he withdrew as fellow State Representative Will Weatherford solidified support.

Rep. J. Dudley Goodlette, the incumbent Representative for the State of Florida J. Dudley Goodlette was unopposed for re-election the year 2006 due to the term limit. Richter took on the challenge to succeed him in the 76th district that spanned across North Naples to Marco Island in the western part of Collier County. Richter won the Republican primary, and he faced Ken McPherson, the Constitution Party candidate. He was endorsed by Naples Daily News, which acknowledged his dedication to “affordable housing and insurance as the big issues facing Florida and the Legislature,” but they acknowledged his position that “[s]ome of his goals and positions on key issues could use a tuneup.” In the end, Richter defeated MacPherson handily by securing 70% of the votes in comparison to MacPherson’s 22 percent.

Richter is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was in the United States Army from 1969 until 1971, earning an Bronze Star Medal and a Combat Infantry Badge in the process. Then, he was a member of the United States Air Force Reserves from 1979 until 1981. Richter was a student at his studies at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1981.
