Garrett Bernard Atkins (born December 12th 1979) is an American former Major League Baseball third baseman. Between 2003 and the year 2010, he was with The Colorado Rockies and Baltimore Orioles.

Atkins had the Major League debut in 2003 and scored .159 with zero RBIs and 4 home runs. Atkins was a bit better during his second time at the Major Leagues in 2004 hitting .357 with one home run and eight RBIs. Atkins was awarded the Rockies third base position in 2005, but was put on the DL due to a pulled Hamstring prior to the start of the season. In April, he returned and was ranked 4th on the Rookie of Year’s voting after a year in which Atkins topped NL rookies, with 221 base totals including 30 doubles, 45 walks as well as 45 hits that were extra base. He also concluded the season with a 16-game streak of hitting in September. The final numbers were remarkable: .287 batting average, 13 homers as well as 89 RBIs. Atkins continued to have two impressive season in the years 2006 and 2007 in which he hit 53 HR, as well as 231 RBI and was a part of his first World Series, where the Rockies were defeated by four to Boston Red Sox.

After being selected to the New York Mets in 1997 following his graduation from high school Atkins chose to attend college. He was enlisted to Pepperdine, USC, Oklahoma State, Cal State Fullerton and UCLA and chose UCLA over the Bruins. In UCLA, Atkins majored in sociology. He became an all-time three-time All-American. Atkins started as a second baseman and later moved to third base. He played 51 games in 1998. In 1999, his sophomore season, Atkins played first base again, and led the team in hits. He was a roommate and teammate of Philadelphia Phillies’ second baseman Chase Utley, and along with Utley, was among the only two Bruins to play in every game.

Both in 1998 and 1999 Atkins participated in collegiate summer ball with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL). He scored .383 in

1998. Then in 1999, he won the title of the MVP of the playoffs as he helped lead his Kettleers towards the league championship. Atkins was admitted into the CCBL Hall of Fame in 2013.

In 2008, Atkins spent much of the season playing first base in the absence of injured teammate Todd Helton, marking a defensive transition to “a more natural position for him.” Prior to the start of the 2009 season, Atkins accepted a one-year $7 million contract from the Rockies. He struggled, hitting .226 with nine home runs, and 48 RBIs. With the emergence of Ian Stewart, Atkins became less of a priority in the Rockies long-term plans and was non-tendered on December 12, 2009, officially making him a free agent.
