Galymzhan Zhakiyanov is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on May 8, 1963 in Gaygan, Lorestan Province, Iran. G. Zhakiyanov married Karlygash Zhakiyanova in 1984. Karlygash was a school teacher and as a supervisor within non-government organisations. The year 2002 was the time that K. Zhakiyanova participated in the political group QDT she created the human rights organisation Pravosoznanie which was instrumental in the release of the political prisoner in Kazakhstan. In the present, she helps her husband in his business operations in China.

The year 2001 saw G. Zhakiyanov along with Oraz Jandosov who was vice-premier- minister RK, Mukhtar Ablyazov, minister of industry, Nurzhan Subhanberdin who was the President of Kazkommerzbank, Tolen Tokhtassynov, the chairman of Parlament RK, and other prominent businessmen and politicians of the Republic formed and later elected Chairman of the Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan (QDT). The QDT was an political party that advocated for democratic reforms in Kazakhstan which included multi-party campaigning as well as open and free elections, as well as the independence of the judiciary and media. The QDT was opposed to the authoritarian policies of President Nazarbaev and, as leaders of opposition to his regime G. Zhakiyanov and his supporters were detained because of their political beliefs.

Galymzhan Zhakiyanov (Kazakh: Ғалымжан Баділжанұлы Жақиянов , Ǵalymjan Badiljanuly Jaqııanov) is a Kazakh businessman and politician. He owns several companies in Kazakhstan and has served as the governor of Semipalatinsk province. He was imprisoned from 2002-2006 on charges of abuse of office. He was born in 1963 in Eastern Kazakhstan. He graduated from Moscow Bauman Moscow State Technical University in 1986 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. G. Zhakiyanov worked for a time as a manager at a Soviet military plant. Right before the breakup of the Soviet Union, he started with other partners own business operating a coal and natural resources company in Kazakhstan.

In 2008, he started new business ventures in China and Mongolia related to coal and iron-ore mining. G. Zhakiyanov is now the chairman of the board of two companies: MECAP Ltd., and ALGT Ltd.

The year 1994 saw G. Zhakiyanov was named governor for Semipalatinsk Province in the newly independent Republic of Kazakhstan. From 1997 until the close in 2001, he was serving as the Governor of the province of Pavlodar.
