Kumar Ponnambalam and grandson of G. G. Ponnambalam one of the leading Tamil political figures. He attended Royal College, Colombo and the Colombo International School. After high school, he enrolled in SOAS, University of London where he graduated with an LL.B. qualification in 1995.
Ponnambalam was a candidate in the 2010 parliamentary elections in the form of one of the TNPF’s candidates for Jaffna District but the TNPF did not win any seats in the Parliament. In February 2011, Ponnambalam was elected Vice- President in the TNPF. He was a candidate in the 2015 elections for the parliamentary seat with the help of TNPF candidate in the Jaffna District but again the TNPF did not win any seats in the parliament.
Ponnambalam was elected to politics after the murder of his father the 5th of January 2000. On October 20, 2001, The All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC) as well as the Eelam People’s Liberation Front Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization and Tamil United Liberation Front formed the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). Ponnambalam ran in the 2001 elections for the parliamentary seat by being one of candidates of the TNA in Jaffna District. He was elected, and was admitted to the parliament. He was elected again in the 2004 election for Parliament. In March 2010, Ponnambalam as well as his fellow TNA lawmakers S. Kajendran and Pathmini Sithamparanathan quit the TNA and joined The Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF).

Ponnambalam graduated as a barrister at-law in Lincoln’s Inn and was called to the bar of England and Wales in 1997. After returning back to Sri Lanka, he qualified as an attorney-at-law , and was admitted into the Bar of Sri Lanka in 1999.
