Tarantello is a native of Pratola Peligna. She completed her undergraduate studies in the University of L’Aquila, earning the degree of bachelor in 1982. She later transferred to New York University for graduate studies within the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences where she earned her master’s degree in 1984 before getting the Ph.D. at the Courant Institute in 1986. Her dissertation entitled, Some Research on The Minimal Period Problem for Nonlinear Vibrating Strings and Hamiltonian Systems and on the number of Solutions for Semilinear Elliptic Equations was directed by Louis Nirenberg.
After completing postdoctoral research with the Institute for Advanced Study and an assistant professorship in a visiting position within The University of California, Berkeley She joined as a member of the Carnegie Mellon University faculty in 1989. After returning back to Italy for an appointment as associate professor of Tor Vergata in 1993, then transferred into the University of Basilicata as a full professor in 1994 returning back to Tor Vergata as a full professor in 1995.
