Gabriele Schnaut (born 24 February 1951) is an German classic singer. began her opera career as a mezzo-soprano, in the year 1976 before moving to dramatic soprano by 1985. She has performed across the world and was a part of the Bayreuth Festival between 1977 and 2000. She recorded music by composers from the 20th century. She also appeared in the premier of operas written by Wolfgang Rihm and Jorg Widmann.
Schnaut was a part of Staatstheater Darmstadt (1978-1980), the Nationaltheater Mannheim (1980-1988), where she performed the role as Ophelia in the world premiere in Wolfgang Rihm’s Die Hamletmaschine. In 1988, she was a part of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Dusseldorf in 1995. She was also an active part of the Hamburgische Staatsoper, at present of the Bayerische Staatsoper (as of 2013).
She performed the part of Iocaste in Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex with Paavo Järvi, Ortrud in Lohengrin as a DVD of the Bayreuth Festival with Peter Schneider (1990) and Puccini’s Turandot as a DVD of the Salzburg Festival with Valery Gergiev (2002).
Schnaut recorded Leonore in Beethoven’s Fidelio with Christoph von Dohnányi (1990). A review devotes a paragraph to her performance, noting:
In 1977, Schnaut began her career on stage at the Bayreuth Festival, singing Waltraute and the second Norn as part of the Jahrhundertring performed by Patrice Chereau. Schnaut is on screen in both roles of Der Ring des Nibelungen. She appeared at the festival in the year 1980. Wellgunde in Gotterdammerung and in 1985 Venus as Tannhauser as well as the Third Norn, in 1986 Sieglinde in Die Walkure, in 1987 Ortrud in Lohengrin as well as In 2000, she played Brunnhilde on Der Ring des Nibelungen.

She began her studies in the Peter Cornelius Conservatory of Mainz with a major in violin as well as studying musicology in Mainz’s University of Mainz. In 1971, she began studying in singing in the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts alongside Elsa Cavelti. Her first ever permanent job was as mezzo-soprano 1975 at Stuttgart’s Staatsoper Stuttgart.
In private study with Hanne-Lore Kuhse in East Berlin she developed to a dramatic soprano. In 1985 she sang the title role of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde at the Theater Dortmund. In 1994 she appeared at La Scala in the title role of Elektra by Richard Strauss and as Brünnhilde in Die Walküre. In this role she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1996. She performed the part such as Kundry in Parsifal at the Wiener Staatsoper from 1996. In Hamburg she sang both the dyer’s wife and the nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten by Richard Strauss. In 1992 she appeared on the occasion of the Summer Olympics in Barcelona, both as Venus in Wagner’s Tannhäuser in a Hamburg production staged by Harry Kupfer, and in the part of Waldvogel in Arnold Schönberg’s Gurre-Lieder. She performed the title roles of Tosca and Turandot, recorded on DVD at the Salzburg Festival in 2002.
