Gabino Palomares is one of the most popular and richest Musician who was born on May 26, 1950 in Comonfort, Guanajuato, Mexico. Gabino Palomares Gomez (born May 26, 1950. Comonfort, Guanajuato, Mexico) is a Mexican musician and singer, as well as an activist on the political and social front. He is among the most prominent supporters in the Nueva Cancion movement in Latin America, and one of the primary founders of the Canto Nuevo movement in Mexico along with Amparo Ochoa, Oscar Chavez as well as the band Los Folkloristas. He is the writer of “La maldicion de Malinche” (Malinche’s Curse 1978) One of the most well-known songs of the movement and more than 100 songs that deal with political, social and love-related topics.
In recognition of his role as a singer-songwriter and an activist for social justice, Gabino Palomares received the honor of being elected, in 1982 in Cuba as the general secretary of the International Committee of the New Song in a position that in which he would serve until 1988.
On September 30, 2013, he performed at the prestigious Mexico City’s Auditorio Nacional in the concert 40 años, Los mismos sueños (40 Years, The Same Dreams) alongside the groups Quilapayún, Inti Illimani, Los Folkloristas, Santiago del Nuevo Extremo, and Uruguayan singer-songwriter Daniel Viglietti.
After almost a decade without releasing a record —which didn’t stop him from performing and continuing his social activism—, he launched in the year 2000 the album Historia cotidiana (An Everyday Story, 2000). The record includes a song dedicated to the EZLN: “Espejos de mi alma” (Mirrors of my soul, 2000) and a personal homage to singer and friend Amparo Ochoa: “Hermosísimo lucero” (“Beautiful Bright Star”).
From 1980 to the present, Gabino Palomares’ career flourished as he performed at numerous festivals and tours throughout Argentina, Cuba, El Salvador, Germany, U.S., Canada, Ecuador, Venezuela, Uruguay, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Peru and Costa Rica. In Mexico, he performed at important venues such as Palacio de Bellas Artes, Auditorio Nacional, Teatro de la Ciudad and Palacio de los Deportes, and toured the country extensively. From 1984 to 1989, he recorded three albums Hace as an Ano (About One Year ago 1984) and No te creo nothing (I Don’t Trust You at All 1987) and?What do we plan to doing? (What are we going to do 1989). Then, in 1991, the group released Canciones contra la Guerra (Songs against war (November 1991) in protest in protest to U.S. military invasion in Iraq.

In the late 1970s Gabino Palomares began to become acknowledged as being among the most prominent performers for the two genres: Mexican Canto Nuevo and the Latin American New Song. He was in 1978 when he released his debut album La Maldicion de Malinche (Malinche’s Curse) which features the most iconic songs, such as “A la patria” (To the Homeland 1978), “La Maldicion de Malinche” (Malinche’s Curse 1978), “La letania de los poderosos” (The Powerful’s Litany 1978). According to the musicologist Jan Fairley, “La maldicion de Malinche” is “surely one of the most important songs of the Americas”. In the year 1978 Gabino Palomares played the role of the composer, singer and the actor for Felipe Santander’s famous work “El extensionista” (The extensionist 1978). The result of this collaboration was in 1985 the album El extensionista (The Extensionist, 1985). In the year 1980, Gabino Palomares recorded his second studio album Fabricando la Luz (Manufacturing the Light the Light, 1980).
Gabino Palomares Gómez was born Comonfort, Guanajuato and studied in chemistry at the Autonomous Universities of San Luis Potosi. The first of his shows, “Poems and Songs” was premiered in the university’s Song Festivals of 1972 with tremendous popularity. The year 1975 saw him relocating from Mexico City to Mexico City where he started singing in bars, “penas”, universities and neighborhoods that were not privileged as well as public squares, union headquarters and small theaters. Two venues were noteworthy: “El meson de la guitarra” and “La pena Tecuicanime.” There was where he was introduced to Amparo Ochoa and Salvador “Chava” Flores and with whom they formed a lasting friendship. Amparo Ochoa performed and recorded some of his tunes which include “La Maldicion de Malinche” (Malinche’s Curse 1978) and “Quien tiene la voz?” (Who is the owner of the voice? 1984). The same manner throughout his career Gabino Palomares sang and recorded several songs, including Salvador “Chava” Flores’ songs. Some of them form included in the album Gabino Palomares ‘ interpretation of Chava Flores (Gabio Palomares Sings songs of Chava Flores 2010, 2010).
On August 3, 2012, Gabino Palomares celebrated his 40-year career with a concert/homage organized by Mexico City’s Government at the Teatro de la Ciudad.
