In March 2014, she became associated with the European Democratic Party (EDP) which is a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Faction within the EU Parliament.

Her main focus is the Free Voters’ regional social and educational policy, and as such she is part of the Bavarian Parliament’s Committee for Education and Culture, and is the Free Voters Parliamentary Faction’s Spokesperson on Education. In addition, Gabi Schmidt is also the faction’s vice-chair in the Free Voter’s Parliamentary Faction.

Schmidt is an Free Voters Member of Parliament since 2013 as well as their nominee for the electoral district of Neustadt in the Aisch-Bad Windscheim as well as Furth-Land. She also was on the Free Voters’ party list for Middle- Franconia. She is in charge of the parties that are a part of Free Voters in the counties of Neustadt/AischBad Windsheim Furth Erlangen-Hochstadt, Neustadt /Aisch-Bad Windsheim in Nurmberg.
