In the wake of a win in the election of the social democrats Gabi Burgstaller was appointed governor on the 28th of April, 2004. She was the first Salzburg female governor, and the first female governor to be elected in Austrian time (after Waltraud Klasnic) and the first post-World Wars Governor of Salzburg not belonging to the OVP.
After a major financial scandal striking the administration of the Land Salzburg she sustained a historic loss in the elections on 5 May 2013. SPÖ lost 15,56% and Burgstaller resigned. She was succeeded as governor by Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP).
On the 31st of March, 2001, Burgstaller received the honor of being the first female to be Austria’s Social Democratic Party with an approval rate of 98% of delegate. On April 25 she was appointed the Governor of Salzburg’s first deputy. Salzburg. She was born in Penetzdorf/Niederthalheim near Schwanenstadt in Upper Austria. After her graduation from the secondary school located in Gmunden and an additional year in England studying Law in The University of Salzburg. From 1987 until 1989 , she worked as an assistant in the Institutes for Constitutional and Administrative Law as well as Sociology of Law respectively at the same university. In 1989, she. She began the political journey as a member in the State Government, whereas she was chairman of the Austrian Social Democratic Party (SPO) from the beginning. On the 27th of April, 1999 Burgstaller was appointed State Councillor for the Salzburg State Government. In the Salzburg State Government, Burgstaller was in charge of female issues including construction, trade consumerism, transportation, and construction.
She won the 2009 Salzburg State Elections with a 39.4% of the votes, losing a 6.0% and two seats, from 17 to 15.
