G. Love featured Jack Johnson on his album in 1999. Philadelphonic performing the first version Jack Johnson’s “Rodeo Clowns” when Jack was a relatively unknown artist. Jack later covered the song for his 2003 release, On and On. G. Love met Johnson through a friend of his surfing who commented, “Hey man, there’s this kid you got to meet. He’s a big fan and he’s got this song called rodeo clowns and I think it’s really great and I really think you should hear it.” Then G Love saw Johnson’s effortless style and talent and invited him to Studio to create the hit song “Rodeo Clowns”.

In 2010, G. Love joined forces with The Avett Brothers who produced and are featured on his album “Fixin’ to Die”. The album was released under the Brushfire label on February 22, 2011. This album showcased G. Love’s love of rockin’ out with Tim Toale, PA-style but in Houston now.

One of his few indoor gigs at this time was a Boston bar called The Tam O’Shanter (a Boston institution which was in business until 2018), where he met drummer Jeffrey “The Houseman” Clemens in January 1993. Dutton and Clemens began working as a duo, they were joined a few months later by bassist Jim “Jimi Jazz” Prescott and became the house band on Mondays at The Plough and Stars in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

In 1993, T-Time traveled into New York to meet with an LA producer who had connection with Michael Jackson (arranged through a family friend). T-Time released recordings from the studio as well as live of Garrett who had only began going by the name G. Love. In 93, G. Love and Special Sauce (as the group was now known) signed a contract with a record label and released their debut album in 1994.

After the move to Boston Garrett was introduced to the local musician Tom DeMille (later nicknamed T-Time by Garrett due to Tom’s passion for both golf and music). Tom had displayed posters in the local music shop ‘Daddy’s Music’, describing his desire to mix blues-influenced music (like Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Little Walter, etc.) and modern music to make a unique sound. This is precisely what Garrett was working on. In the beginning, Garrett was focused on the recording of the early versions of songs like Yea it’s That Easy and This Ain’t living which incorporated influences from street music and classic blues instrumentation. Early versions featured Dobro guitar set to the classic 1990s HipHop beat, and supported by keys and synth bass performed by T-Time. In 1992, Garrett and T-Time realized that neither had the skills to create decent drum tracks. Garrett began to seek assistance in this field.
