George Edward Smith (ne Haddad born on January 27, 1952) is an American guitarist. He was the lead guitarist of the group Hall & Oates during the time of their peak from 1979 to 1985. He was then the musical director for the sketch comedy television show Saturday Night Live from 1985 until 1995. He was the head of the Saturday Night Live Band.

In the beginning of the 1970s, Smith quit the Poconos to move to New Haven, Connecticut. New Haven, Connecticut, region, where he was a member in a group dubbed”The Scratch Band, which also included his future Hall & Oates bandmate Mickey Curry. In the latter part of 1977, Smith received his first break with Dan Hartman, fresh off the success of “Instant Replay”. Smith hired the guitarist to be the frontman of his band for an “lip-sync tour” of Europe as well as the U.S. When he returned in America’s East coast, Smith moved to Manhattan and was the guitar player of Gilda Radner’s 1979 Broadway show Gilda Live. Radner and Smith became friends and were married shortly thereafter, but they divorced in 1982. In 1981, he debuted his debut self-titled album In the World, featuring Paul Simon and Radner singing as backup to the record. In 1992, he recorded his second album and this time in collaboration with Saturday Night Live Band entitled Get A Little.

During his SNL years Smith was the musical director for special events such as the 1988 Emmy Awards, the 1993 Rhythm and Blues Foundation Awards, Bob Dylan’s 30th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Garden as well as acting as the musical director at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert in Cleveland. Smith also has written with his friend and fellow musician Jimmy Buffett. “Six String Music” appears on Buffett’s album Fruitcakes. In 1996, Smith received a Grammy nomination for his work with Buddy Guy on the album “Live: The Real Deal”
