Fuyuko Matsui is one of the most popular and richest Artist who was born on January 20, 1974 in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Fuyuko Matsui (Song Jing Dong Z , Matsui Fuyuko, born January 20th 1974) is a female Japanese artist who specializes with Nihonga paintings. Her work is renowned as the creator of the “new Kusozu” series. Matsui has been creating work on the basis of her results of psychoanalysis, and placing an emphasis on her experiences and fascinations with violence, loss experience as well as stress, repression and trauma.
Despite the often surprising aspects, her art has a place in the long tradition of Japanese art dating back hundreds of years. For instance the painting “Insane Woman under the Cherry Tree” (2006) is an inspiration from “Ogress under Willow Tree,” painted of Soga Shohaku (1730-1781) The artist of the Edo period who was inspired by the work from his fellow Muromachi Era painter Soga Jasoku (d. 1483).
When Japan was hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011, Matsui was in her studio working on a painting.
From late 2011 to early 2012, she had her first major retrospective at a large public museum. Entitled “Becoming Friends with All the Children in the World” the exhibition, held at the Yokohama Museum of Art included art from her entire career as well as new works.
She held four group shows in 2006 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, Yokohama Museum of Art in Kanagawa, Tokyo University of the Arts and Music, and the Sato Museum of Art in Tokyo. The year 2009 saw her work were included in the group exhibit “Medicine and Art” in Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. She took part as part of an exhibition called “Koizumi Yakumo-The Secret of Lafcadio Hearn” group exhibit at the Contemporary Art Museum in Kumamoto.

Matsui obtained the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in painting from Joshibi Junior College of Art and Design in 1994. Between 2002 and 2004 she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees of Fine Arts of Japanese Painting from Tokyo University of the Arts. In the year 2007, Matsui earned her Doctoral Degree (PhD) in Japanese Painting with her doctoral dissertation entitled “The Inescapable Awakening to pain, through Visual Perception via the Sensory Nerves.”
Matsui has been holding solo exhibitions since 2004. The first show was held at Ginza Surugadai Art Gallery, Tokyo, “L’espoir Fuyuko Matsui Exhibition”. In 2011 the catalogue of her exhibition was released with her exhibit “Fuyuko MATSUI: Becoming Friends with All the Children in the World” at the Yokohama Museum of Art, Kanagawa, Japan. The other exhibitions are at Gallery Naruyama, Tokyo (2005 2007 (2013) and 2007), Hirano Museum, Shizuoka (2008) and Galerie DA-END in Paris (2010).
Her art has been widely exhibited in Japan and she has been featured on TV and magazines. She was one of the featured artists at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo’s “Annual 2006” exhibition and at the Yokohama Museum of Art’s “Nihonga Painting: Six Provocative Artists” in August 2006.
