Fumiko Shiraga (Bai Shen Dian Zi , Shiraga Fumiko, July 5 1967 – January 13 17th, 2017.) was a pianist from Germany and Japan who became a star in her home country in the 1990s. She became popular in the world of classical music through performances on CDs as well as public performances particularly of concertos for piano disguised as well as transcriptions of famous compositions for chamber ensembles.
For the last 20 years, she resided in Hamburg in Germany, where she passed away from breast cancer following many years of fighting the disease in January of 2017 less than two weeks before her most recent performance.

As a student she was a piano teacher with Detlef Krus (Folkwang Hochschule), Friedrich Wilhelm Schnurr (Hochschule for Music Detmold) and Vladimir Krainev (Hochschule fur Musik and Theater Hannover) and was awarded her diploma in 1995 with the most prestigious distinction: she received the highest score in her soloist tests. Further training was received from masterclasses in international masterclasses taught by Nikita Magaloff Yara Bernette Jeremy Menuhin Paul Badura-Skoda, Edith Picht-Axenfeld as well as from the Polish teacher Malgorzata Botor-Schreiber.
Fumiko Shiraga has been performing as a soloist and with orchestras and also chamber orchestras. She was instrumental in the revitalisation of transcriptions (for violin, flute, violoncello, and piano) performed of Johann Nepomuk Hummel, of several of the Mozart piano concertos. She recorded two Piano Concertos composed by Chopin in a piano String Quintet transcription (1997) and in 2001 and with an identical arrangement she recorded Beethoven’s First as well as Second Piano concertos and piano music composed by Bruckner and an arrangement for piano of his 7th Symphony.
Several first prizes at the Young Musician’s Competition, the special prize at the International Schubert Competition in Dortmund in 1989; a scholarship from the Stendal Music Foundation In 1992, a prize (1993) at the International Chopin Competition in Göttingen, a new scholarship (1995) from Deutscher Musikrat (German Music Council, a member of the International Music Council) in Bonn and acceptance into the 40th National Selection of “Concerts by Young Artists” (1996).
