Wainman and the rival driver Andy Smith were the subject of an BBC documentary Gears and Tears which aired in 2010. It was the car-based model of War of the Roses with Wainman from Silsden and Smith being from Rochdale. He has been a winner of 3 World Championships and fourteen National Points Championships in addition to as numerous other championships. Wainman is also a builder of standard cars to accommodate other racers. in the Netherlands, Wainman has won the Long Track World Championship at Baarlo and the World Cup at Venray.
In the UK “off season” that runs from January between January and the month of March Wainman goes to New Zealand to compete in their similar formula, Superstocks. In 1998, he was the winner of the World 240 Championship, and also won two other championships in the following years. As of 2013 , he is the only racer to have had three wins at this championship. He constructed and raced his own car that he kept his home in New Zealand but this was removed in 2014.
