To record for EMI Classics Frank Peter Zimmermann recorded all the major violin concertos as well in a variety of important works for solo violin, as well as for piano and violin. In 2002, Teldec recorded his version of Gyorgy Ligeti’s Violin Concerto.
In January 2016 Zimmermann was loaned the 1727 “Général Dupont” Stradivarius for an initial period of two years. Also known as the “Grumiaux” Stradivarius, it had been owned by the celebrated Belgian virtuoso Arthur Grumiaux. The instrument is owned by entrepreneur, philanthropist and amateur violinist Mr Yu, who purchased it in February 2015 through Rare Violins of New York for an undisclosed sum – making the violin the first Stradivarius to be owned by a private individual on the Chinese mainland. In early 2017, Zimmerman was reunited with his Lady Inchiquin.
From 2001 until the year 2015 Zimmermann performed the 1711 Stradivarius violin, also known as”the “Lady Inchiquin”, previously performed by Fritz Kreisler. The instrument was given to Zimmermann by Dusseldorf-based banking institution WestLB AG, but was taken back in February of 2015, following the expiration in the contract for loan with WestLB AG’s successor in law, Portigon Financial Services, because of its bankruptcy.
