2. His parents were Robert Sallee James and Zerelda (Cole) James, and he was the oldest of three children.
3. During the American Civil War he joined the Missouri State Guard and the guerrilla band of William Clarke Quantrill.
4. He was part of the James–Younger Gang, and was involved in at least four robberies between 1868 and 1876.
