Pellizotti was born in Latisana, Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia. In his professional time in the sport, Pellizotti was known as a specialist in climbing and took home Stage 10 in the 2006 Giro d’Italia, Stage 16 in the 2008 Giro d’Italia and Stage 17 in the 2009 Giro d’Italia. After finishing third overall at the 2009 Giro and winning the polka dot shirt during Paris as the top climber in the 2009 Tour de France (which has been pulled) and was named the most combative (Aggressive) participant during Stages 9 and 17. The moment he started every event, Pellizotti was seen making the sign of the cross, and kissing the crucifix around his neck.
On May 3, 2010 the name of Pellizotti was announced in La Gazzetta dello Sport as being among the riders being investigated through the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) for “irregular blood values”. Pellizotti was said to have “suspicious values” on the day before 2009’s Tour de France and request was made by the UCI for an investigation. The news was confirmed later in the day in an UCI press announcement. Pellizotti was supposed to be among Liquigas- Doimo Team leaders at the 2010 Giro d’Italia, but was immediately removed from the team and replaced by Vincenzo Nibali. The team of Liquigas-Doimo said that they believe in the explanation offered by Pellizotti and have begun an additional investigation. Just after the end of the season this suspension was lifted on ground of the lack of evidence. Pellizotti expressed a desire to seek financial compensation against the UCI. Liquigas-Doimo refused to renew the contract of Pellizotti following the end of this season. Pellizotti’s appeal was heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in March of 2011. In response to the court’s request for quick decision the athlete was banned for two years following the court’s decision to uphold the appeal of the UCI. His ban lasted until May 2012. The Court also revoked all the results of 17 May 2009, which means that Pellizotti missed a stage victory and was placed third overall during the Giro d’Italia and a stage victory and overall win in the mountain and combativity categories during the Tour de France.
