He also established LILA (Italian League to Fight Against Aids) in 1987; LINFA (Italian New Family League, originally LIFF, Italian Common-Law Families League) that aims to advocate legislation that will allow an official recognition for gay and heterosexual relationships in 1997; and NOI (Italian Gay News) the first Italian gay news agency, for which he continues to be as editor, since the 29th of May, 1998.
On June 28, 1982 Grillini assisted in the formation of the Circolo Omosessuale Ventotto Giugno in Bologna which was the first gay organization to receive government funds. The group would later grow into the national organization Arcigay Italy’s top gay organizationthat was established in 1985. Grillini was the secretary for two consecutive years prior to becoming its president in 1987. He convened an extra session of Arcigay to discuss honoring the existence of lesbians in the group. Since 1998, he’s been the Honorary president of Arcigay.

Grillini began his political career in the 1970s as a member of his Proletarian Unity Party; in 1985, he was an Communist Party candidate in the province of Bologna. From 1991 to 2001 , he was a member in the Health Ministry’s “National Council for the Fight against AIDS”. The first time he was elected as a member of the Council of the Province of Bologna in 1990. He was later re-elected between 1995 and 1999. In 1999, he was elected as president of the Italian Ministry for Equal Opportunities’ “Commission for the Rights and Equal Opportunities of Homosexual People”. After the dissolution and demise of the Communist Party, he joined the Democratic Party of the Left and later changed its name to Democrats of the Left.
