On 19 July 2007 , he was appointed the head director at Serie C1 club Verona. The problem was that Verona was characterized by a bad start to the Serie C1 2007-08 campaign, having lost none of their first seven league games and a shocking 1-2 loss against Legnano forced the management of the club to dismiss Colomba on October 8, 2007.

In December 2008 he was appointed as new head coach of Ascoli, becoming the third manager of the bianconeri in the Serie B 2008–09, and replacing Vincenzo Chiarenza. He guided Ascoli into a mid-table finish at the end of the season, but his contract was not extended and therefore left the club.

After taking the reins of the rossoblu club, he defined his appointment as head coach of Bologna as a dream coming true. He guided Bologna to keep their place in the Serie A in 2009–10, however his position was put under question after Sergio Porcedda took over the club. Originally confirmed at the helm of the club, he was ultimately dismissed on 29 August 2010, exactly one day before the first game of the season, allegedly due to disagreements with the board.

The Colomba team returned to Reggina in 1999. She continued to play there in Calabria for three seasons. which ended with a relegation in 2001 (after losing in a play-off game to Verona) and a subsequent advancement in 2002. In 2002-03, Colomba went through a tense Serie B experience at fallen giants Napoli and was dismissed and a subsequent recall and a disappointing finish of 15th in the process. The following year was a year that saw Colomba performing his 3rd return at Reggina and he gets dismissed after the 11th matchday and is replaced with Giancarlo Camolese. The 2004-05 season kicked off with Colomba in charge of newly-promoted Serie A side Livorno, but it abruptly ended in January when the club was disbanded and was replaced with Roberto Donadoni. In October 2005 the Serie B team at risk of losing its place, Avellino, called him to take over Francesco Oddo; however, Avellino eventually lost its spot to Serie B following two play-off games lost to AlbinoLeffe.
