Francisco Mela is one of the most popular and richest Drummer who was born on February 5, 1968 in Bayamo, Granma, Cuba. Born from Bayamo, Cuba, Francisco Mela attended the Music School of Arts El Yarey in his teens prior to continuing education at National School of Arts for Teachers known as called CENCEA. He was a teacher the Rafael Cabrera Conservatory of Music and was a part of a group of most renowned Latin jazz musicians and also led his own group, MelaSon Latin Jazz Band which toured across Mexico. He relocated to Boston to pursue studies at Berklee College of Music and was asked to join the faculty of percussion. He was the resident drummer at Wally’s Cafe. This is where he came up with the idea of what would become his own band.
The album FE (2016) will be Francisco Mela’s 4th and most recent work as a bandleader. The album, which was self-released, features two notable musicians who are part of his group The Crash Trio, pianist Leo Genovese, and bassist Gerald Cannon. As a guest on the album is the legendary guitar player John Scofield. The album holds significant significance for Mela since it was written to honor one of his mentors on the guitar, McCoy Tyner, and is an honor to his late parents.

Mela was appointed to be the Twin Cities Jazz Festival’s initial artistic director in 2014. Prior to his appointment, he worked as the artistic director of the Xalapa Jazz Festival in Veracruz, Mexico (2010-2013).

As of 2005, Mela became part of the band of Saxophonist Joe Lovano. Particularly noteworthy was the album released in 2008 released on Blue Note entitled Folk Art.Later the same year Mela got a call from McCoy Tyner to join his trio.
Mela released his first album named Melao during 2006 and received positive reviews. His second CD as a drummer, Cirio (Half Note Records) took place in the year 2008 during one week of residency at NYC’s Blue Note Jazz Club and includes Mark Turner, Jason Moran, Larry Grenadier, and Lionel Loueke. Tree Of Life (2011) is Mela’s third studio album and the second album released through Half Note, is an collection of his favourite bands that inspired him become drummer (Miles Davis’ fusion band with Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Weather Report and the Latin-jazz supergroup Irakere). The album showcases the group’s name “Cuban Safari,” and offers Mela the opportunity to present an eclectic fusion that combines Cuban or jazz polyrhythms. Tree Of Life received critical praise from a wide range of jazz critics and journalists and established Mela to be one of the rising band leaders.
In late 2016, Mela was part of an inaugural ensemble that joined Afro-Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés and saxophonist Joe Lovano for an international tour throughout Europe and North America. He also leads his own group, The Crash Trio.
