The year 2002 was perhaps the most difficult year for Bustamante particularly in light of his participation in the World Pool Championships. When the tournament was running, Bustamante was most shocked when he received a message from his wife, informing the family that their daughter, who was just an years old had passed away. In shock, Bustamante strongly considered forfeiting his place in the tournament in order to go back to the Philippines However, some of the individuals around him encouraged him to continue.
The next year, Bustamante won the Motolite 9-ball Tournament, an event held in the Philippines, at the expense of Antonio Lining. The victory earned him $30K, which was the largest first prize offered in a Philippine-held tournament at that time (this was later surpassed when Alcano won $100K in the 2006 WPA World Nine-ball Championship, which was held in that country).
For 2007, he was ranked #7 in Pool & Billiard Magazine’s “Fans’ Top 20 Favorite Players” poll.
Bustamante was the winner of his first Peninsula Nine-ball tournament Gabriel’s Las Vegas International Nine-ball tournament and the IBC Tokyo Nine- ball World Championship, as well as the Japan All-Japan Nine-ball championship. He also won his first Sudden Death Seven-ball tournament , and gave the prize to his daughter, who was tragically lost. After a series of wins He was named one of the AZBilliards 2002 Best Player.

After his victory at Tulsa, Bustamante locked up the 1998 Camel Pro Billiards Series year-long points fund’s top spot. Then he finished the year with a record-breaking performance by winning the Columbus 10-Ball Championship and being the only player ever to be awarded the three Camel titles in the same season. The Columbus 10-Ball win also made the first Camel trifecta with three wins in each of the three games that are played in the Camel Pro Billiards Series: the ten-ball, nine ball and eight-ball. Famous for his unique style at the table and his behind-the-back shot, Bustamante ranks among the top Filipino players in the game. He is joined by his fellow Kapampangan Efren Reyes Marlon Manalo, and Ronato Alcano. He also holds the record for the strongest break shot.
As of 1999, Bustamante placed 3rd in the World Nine-ball Championship of the WPA in 1999, after being defeated by Efren Reyes who later won the event. The following month, he was awarded the International Challenge of Champions. He was again the winner of that event three years later.
Bustamante also won the tournament called the World Pool League in 2004 where he defeated the then world nine-ball champion Alex Pagulayan. He reached the finals of that event in 2001 but was bested by Steve Knight of Great Britain.
