Black was born on Charlemont Street in Dublin in 1960 to an musical family. She went to St Louis High School, Rathmines. The father of her Kevin was a skilled mandolinist and fiddle player. He was a plasterer by trade , and an ancestor to Rathlin Island, County Antrim. The mother of her Patty (from Dublin) used to perform in local dancehalls. The youngest among five children. and has 3 brothers Shay, Michael and Martin and one other sister Mary Black, who is also a popular artist.

Black got raved reviews when on tour through Australia in the Australian and New Zealand in March 1993 together with 20 other Irish musicians, during an Guinness tribute to Irish music. The tour resulted in signing a recording contract with an Irish company Dara Records. She released her debut self- titled album on the label in 1994. called Talk to Me. It was an instant success It sold more than 100,000 copies and reached the top of her charts in her home country Ireland. The album included four Nanci Griffith tracks (which were not recorded in the studio by Nanci when she released release) and an original Vince Gill song and John Lennon’s “Intuition”. It was however her rendition to the Christie Hennessy song, “All the Lies That You Told Me” The song that garnered the most attention. It signified the arrival to Black as a prominent young talent. “Talk to Me came out in both the UK as well as the United States also, where she performed in 1994 on tour.

2001 brought the release of a compilation, The Best of Frances Black, again on Dara-Dolphin Records. The disc included 16 tracks from her recordings with Arcady and The Black Family, as well as her solo recordings. Her two most recent albums How High the Moon (2003) and This Love Will Carry (2006) have also sold well in Ireland and Black toured the United States in support of the recordings. Her latest compilation, The Essential Frances Black (2008), went platinum and contained 40 of her most popular songs.

She herself returned to college as a mature student in 2004 and qualified as an addiction counsellor, and did some counselling work at the Rutland Addiction Treatment Centre in Dublin. She established a charity called the Rise Foundation in 2009 which supports family members who have a loved one with an alcohol, drug or gambling problem. Rise runs a number of 10-week family programmes around the country and a one-to-one counselling service for family members who are suffering from stress and anxiety living with a loved one with an addiction problem.

Frances Black (born 25 June 1960) is a famous Irish musician and politician. Her fame exploded in the latter half of the 1980s, when she began playing in her family’s group, The Black Family, singing a mixture of contemporary and traditional Irish music.

The musical career of Black began at the age of 17 at the age of 17, when she started singing along with her siblings in the family group called The Black Family. She began to gain confidence in her singing talents and honed her performance skills by joining the group Arcady in 1988 (with the former De Dannan members Johnny McDonagh, and Brendan Larrissey, Patsy Broderick, Sean Keane, Cathal Hayden, Sharon Shannon, and Paul Doyle). The band toured throughout Europe, Iraq and the United States. They released Their debut record, After the Ball, featuring a mix of traditional tunes , vocals and songs. The single that was included on The album’s name track “After the Ball”, that featured Black as lead vocalist was a hit on the Irish charts and had a significant impact on market in the American Folk market. Due to her family’s young age and the long tour schedule was too to bear for Black to handle, and she decided to quit the group. The last time she toured with the group took place in the US in August 1992.

The follow-up album was 1998’s Don’t Get Me Wrong, which was released in the UK under Sony Records and was her fourth solo effort. It once again cemented Ms Black’s reputation as an international performer, becoming just as revered as her older sister.
