Firhad Hakim is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 1, 1959 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Firhad Hakim (Bengali: phirhaad haakim) (born 1 January 1959) is an Indian politician in the Cabinet Minister for the Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Government of West Bengal and the Mayor of Kolkata which is the three Megacity within India.He is a part of the All India Trinamool Congress party, Hakim was elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 2009. A year later He was appointed as an official minister within the Mamata Banerjee’s ministry. In December of 2018 He was elected as the mayor of the city after the resignation of previous mayor Sovan Chatterjee. He was only the second Muslim since independence of India to be elected the city’s mayor.

Hakim’s grandfather moved to Kolkata from Bihar. His grandfather emigrated Gaya district in Bihar in Bihar to Kolkata and began his business. The father of Hakim, Abdul Hakim, was an official of Kolkata Port Trust. Kolkata Port Trust. Hakim’s mother Manika Mukhopadhyay is a Bengali Hindu and was the assistant headmaster of the school in Kolkata. Her family’s home is situated in Faridpur district in Bangladesh. The couple is Ismat Hakim. They have three daughters–Priyadarshini, Shabba and Afsha. They reside in Chetla which is a suburb in South Kolkata. Bobby is his nickname. In 2016, the Narada sting operation video was released in which Hakim was seen allegedly taking bribes. On 19 September 2017, he was questioned for eight hours by the Central Bureau of Investigation at Nizam Palace about the sting operation. Hakim said that the CBI probe was a “political conspiracy” against his party and that “he was not seen taking cash in any of the footage”.

In the 2016 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, Hakim defeated his nearest rival, Rakesh Singh of the Left Front-Indian National Congress alliance by a margin of 26,548 votes. On 16 June 2017, he was appointed chairman of the Tarakeswar Development Board.

3 March 2013 on March 3, 2013, the Ultadanga Flyover (located in East Kolkata) fell down, leaving three victims injured. Hakim blamed the existence of a crack within the flyover as the cause of the collapse. He claimed that the issue occurred because of “not related to maintenance but a technical fault in the bolt system”. Then, in June of 2014, the president announced 22 municipalities would be set up to be established in West Bengal.

In the mid-1990s, Hakim was first elected as a councilor in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. On November 11, 2009, Hakim was elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Alipore district after beating Communist Party candidate, Kaustav Chatterjee with 27555 voters during the by-poll.

The 2011 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, Hakim won from the Kolkata Port constituency as a candidate for the All India Trinamool Congress. Hakim received 63,866 votes, and beat his nearest opponent Moinuddin Shams from the All India Forward Bloc by 2503 votes. Then, he was elected the Secretary for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs in the initial Mamata Banerjee government.

Before the 2016 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, Hakim, while speaking to Maleeha Hamid Sidiqqui of Pakistani newspaper Dawn, referred to his constituency as “mini-Pakistan”. However, he denied making such a statement. He said “she (the Pakistani journalist) only asked me that this place looks like Karachi of Pakistan. I did not make any comment”. He also said that he was “being targeted for being a Muslim and that it was a communal conspiracy”.
