Patten got her first education in the United States. She was a champion in sports and was particularly interested in swimming. When she returned home to Australia along with her parents in 1978 Patten was a student at Hawker College in Canberra where she took classes in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Industrial Arts and Technical Drawing as well as landscape Design as well as Environmental Studies. She then went on to pursue studies in Landscape Architecture and Industrial Design at the University of Canberra. After graduation, she earned a degree in fashion design, and then started her own fashion labelcalled Body Politics. The first boutique opened within Yarralumla in the mid-80s in which she offered her own fashion designs along with the designs of her colleagues in Sydney. In the recession of the early 1990s in Australia there was a lot of Patten’s high-end collection was primarily from sex industry.
