Finley Quaye (born 25 March 1974 in Edinburgh, Scotland) is a Scottish musician from Scotland. He was awarded his 1997 Mobo Award for best reggae performance, as well as his 1998 BRIT Award for Best Male Solo Artist.
Quaye played with his band on stage at Roxy at LA along with SOB’s, in NYC for an introduction tour in 1998. They performed alongside Ben Harper and Eagle Eye Cherry and also played San Francisco. The majority of the album was recorded by Maverick A Strike at Fire House Studios in NYC in 1994 while he was signing with Polydor. In the past 20 years his home has been on the streets of NYC, Miami and in Los Angeles. He has performed for the Rio Free Jazz Festival alongside The Roots in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. He also was the first UK group to play the main stage at the festival at Hong Kong at Rockit Festival. Quaye has been the first UK band to perform at the stage at a festival within Serbia in the EXIT festival, and also was in live performances at Vancouver Folk Festival and Star Belly Jam in the year 2010. The singer also played throughout France on the stages of L’Elysee Montmartre, La Grand Halle De La Villette, Le Bataclan and La Cigale as well as throughout Germany in Germany at Columbia Halle in Berlin and E Werks in Koln. Quaye also performed at the Music Box in Lisbon and was a support for Julian Marley in Cascais and tour South Africa twice, performing in Limpopo, Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg.
He released the EP Pound for Pound with Intune Records in 2008, with Norman Grant of the Twinkle Brothers featuring Sly Dunbar and Lloyd Parks. He recorded in 1998 with Buju Banton and Sly Dunbar in Kingston, Jamaica at Penthouse Studios and also recorded with Tricky and Iggy Pop at Sony Music Studios, in Manhattan, New York City.
In April 2012, Quaye was charged with aggravated assault in Edinburgh. He was subsequently found guilty and sentenced to 225 hours of unpaid work. In November of the same year, he was declared bankrupt with a tax debt of £383,000 after HMRC applied to the courts to recover the money. Official documents stated that Quaye had “zero assets”. Quaye also admitted possession of cannabis in 2003.
At Madness the 1998 outdoor concert, Madstock IV (billed as an event that was billed as a pre-1998 World Cup “friendly”), Quaye was due to perform for approximately 40 minutes. However, after making snide remarks about the England football team’s potential performance at the tournament the stage, he was booed off by the cheering crowd after just 20 minutes, and was not allowed to return.

Finley Quaye was influenced early in his early years from jazz singers Pete King, Ronnie Scott who began his music career in the kitchen making tea, and running errands for Finley’s father’s group, as well as Lionel Hampton. Quaye first heard of jazz when he was a kid, and grew up within London together with his mum who would take him along with her to the jazz club of Ronnie Scott to watch performances of American jazz musicians who were touring Europe including Buddy Rich, who recorded his live album in 1980. His mother was in long-term friendships to musician Pete King, who hosted and played at the Ronnie Scott’s Club located in Frith Street, London, and Dodi Fayed who was a film producer and created Breaking Glass with Hazel O’Connor.
Quaye signed a solo recording deal in 1997 with Polydor Records and moved to New York City. He joined Epic/Sony after Polydor released him from contract. In late 1997, he made it to the UK Top 20 twice, with “Sunday Shining” and “Even After All”. His name was established with Maverick A Strike, released in September 1997. The album was certified gold just three weeks later and directly led to winning the BRIT Award victory. The album has been certified platinum 2x by the UK. It was in the year 1998 that Quaye played George Gershwin’s “It Ain’t Necessarily So” in support of The Red Hot Organization’s album compilation, Red Hot + Rhapsody in which was a tribute to George Gershwin, which raised funds for various charities dedicated to growing AIDS awareness and combating the disease.
Two more albums were released on Epic, Vanguard (2000) and Much More Than Much Love (2004). “Spiritualized” became his last single to score a top 40 landing in the UK chart when it was released in September 2000, reaching number 26. In 2004 the single “Dice” was released in collaboration with William Orbit and featuring Beth Orton. The song featured in Fox Network’s The OC and on the season 1 soundtrack, becoming a minor hit.
