Filippo Simeoni is one of the most popular and richest Sport Cyclist who was born on August 17, 1971 in Desio, Lombardy, Italy. Filippo Simeoni (born August 17 1971) is an Italian former cycling champion and 2009 Italian road race champion of the Italian road race. Simeoni took home two stages of the Vuelta a Espana in 2001 and 2003, as well as the 2009 Italian National Road Race Championship.
Because Simeoni was a witness in the prosecution in the legal proceeding against Ferrari during the time that Armstrong took action against him during his 2004 Tour, Italian authorities threatened to file accusations of intimidation of witnesses against Armstrong. In March 2005, Armstrong was questioned by authorities, but without any decision. Armstrong was arrested for a crime by Italian officials in the month of December. A court of criminal appeals refused to take up the case in January 2006. On March 6, 2006, Armstong’s attorney requested a court to dismiss the defamation suit brought by Simeoni. On April 13, 2006, Simeoni removed the defamation lawsuit in the same day that Armstrong dropped his lawsuit.
In May 2009 he returned his Italian Championship jersey as a protest after his team was not invited to the 2009 Giro d’Italia.
In October 2012, USADA stripped Armstrong of all seven of his Tour titles and banned from all sports that follow the World Anti-Doping Code for life, effectively ending his competitive career. Simeoni was one of the key witnesses in USADA’s case against Armstrong and related how Armstrong threatened him during the 2004 Tour. In its “reasoned decision” announcing Armstrong’s ban, USADA harshly criticized Armstrong’s behavior during the incident, which it called a “sad moment in cycling.” It found that Armstrong’s decision to chase Simeoni down was “dangerous and impetuous,” since it put him at serious risk of an accident. Moreover, it found that Armstrong had engaged in “attempted witness intimidation,” which was in and of itself a violation of the World Anti-Doping Code.
In the 18th stage of this year’s Tour de France, Simeoni was able to catch six riders in a breakaway who did not pose a threat Armstrong’s lead position. At that point, Armstrong was leading the race by seven minutes and was on his path to his 6th consecutive Tour victory. However, Armstrong broke from the peloton and chased Simeoni down, causing Armstrong’s adversaries T-Mobile Team to try to capture the breakaway. It would not only capture Simeoni and the chances the six riders of the breakaway winning the race. Six riders pleaded with Armstrong to go back to the peloton, however Armstrong was not willing to leave unless Simeoni joined his. Armstrong’s longtime top domestique, George Hincapie, later recalled being surprised at Armstrong’s move, given his all- but-insurmountable lead.
