Dewinter was already politically active during his high school years at the Sint-Franciscus-Xaverius instituut in Bruges. As a 16-year-old, he established an organization called the Flemish Student Action Group (Vlaamse Studenten Actie groep) which later changed into Nationalist Young Students League (Nationalistisch Jong Studenten Verbond). In 1978, the group was briefly a part of the Flemish People’s Party (Vlaamse Volkspartij). In September 1982, he moved to Antwerp, where he did not complete his first year (candidate) in political and social sciences at the University of Antwerp, and became a member of the Nationalist Student Society (Nationalistische Studentenvereniging), one of the ideological seminaries of the Vlaams Belang. The year 1983 was the first time he was an official part of the Flemish Block (Vlaams Blok). He earned a degree as a journalist from the Erasmus College (Erasmus Handelsschool) in 1985. In November 1987, he was elected a as a member of the Belgian parliament. In that parliament there was a political alliance together with Gerolf Annemans (who was, in the previous year, was the successor to the founder-Flemish Block’s president Karel Dillen). Under the leadership of Dewinter the parliamentary group continued expand, particularly in 1991 and 1991, when it was the time that Flemish Block, from a tiny party, grew to around 12 percent of voters. This expansion has continued since, but its success is beginning to diminish because of the growth of other parties such as e.g. Lijst Dedecker.
On November 6, 1998, Filip Dewinter visited the Lommel German war cemetery, where thousands of bodies of Nazi Germany Wehrmacht soldiers of WW2 were laid to rest. The group of him and other members of his party, particularly Neo- Nazi Bert Eriksson, wanted to pay respect to and decorate on the tombs of 38 Flemish SS collaborators who were fighting for Nazi Germany and adhered to the fascist Nazi ideology. The Belgian police halted the small protest and then pushed back. Only people with who have German citizenship were permitted to go into the cemetery. In a 1992 debate on the University of Antwerp, Philip Dewinter spoke of a few people as being his close acquaintances. A majority of them were among the group of Nazis and Anti Semites or other fascists, such as Bert Eriksson, Staf De Clercq, and other people that were found guilty of treason such as Cyriel Verschaeve and August Borms.
A December 2005 interview by Dewinter with the American Jewish newsweekly The Jewish Week included a question if “Jews should vote for a party that espouses xenophobia”. Dewinter responded by saying: “Xenophobia is not the word I would use. If it absolutely must be a ‘phobia,’ let it be ‘Islamophobia.'” This statement, as well as the Blok’s condemnation for racism, have weighted heavily on the French-speaking Belgian Socialist Party as well as other francophone and Flemish parties for them to become part of an appeal against the Vlaams Belang at the Council of State, an appeal that tries to take away the government subsidy of the Vlaams Belang.
