On November 29, 2010 Abbasi was badly injured and barely escaped an attempted assassination in the Tehran street, when a motorbike rider connected a bomb to his vehicle as he rode to work. A similar attack that day also killed another scientist named Professor. Majid Shahriari, who was also a professor in Shahid Beheshti University.
Abbasi was removed from office on 16 August 2013 and Salehi replaced him in the post.
Abbasi has been “listed in an annex to U.N. Security Council Resolution 1747 of 24 March 2007, as a person involved in Iran’s nuclear or ballistic missile activities”. The resolution also imposes an asset freeze as well as travel notifications. Abbasi is identified as an “Senior Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces Logistics (MODAFL) scientist, with ties with the Institute of Applied Physics, who is in close contact with Mahabadi (also named as a UN Special Representative by UN).

Fereydoon Abbasi Davani (Persian: frydwn `bsy dwny born 11 July , 1958) is an Iranian nuclear scientist who served as the director of the Atomic Energy Organization from 2011 until 2013. He was able to escape an assassination plot in the year 2010 however, he was severely injured.
Abbasi was an instructor of nuclear Physics within Shahid Beheshti University and has been an alleged part of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) since 1979. Islamic Revolution. Abbasi was reportedly involved in nuclear research in the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI). In the years prior to being appointed the head of the AEOI he was the head of the department of physics of the Tehran’s Imam Hossein University.
Abbasi was appointed head of AEOI by then President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on 13 February 2011 to succeed Ali Akbar Salehi. In his tenure the AEOI was unwilling to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In fact in May 2011 Fereydoon Abbasi was the recipient of a letter from the IAEA, where its Director General Yukiya Amano reiterated the agency’s concerns about the “existence of a possible military dimension” to Iran’s nuclear programme and stressed the importance of clarifying these issues, requesting prompt access to relevant locations, equipment, documentation and persons. In June 2011 Abbasi replayed evasively, so much so that the IAEA Director could only repeat his request for credible assurances.
