About five years later, at the local elections of 30 , August 2009, the incumbent won elected with 47.7 percent of the votes. His main adversary, Paul M. Kirch of the CDU was elected with 38.2 percent. While campaigning, he was supported as a candidate through the regional chapter of Alliance ’90/The Greens. This group unlike others, did NOT run its own mayor candidate.
In the election for the town of Stolberg on the 26th of September in 2004 Gatzweiler was elected to office at first. There was no candidate who had a majority vote in the past, with former Stolberg city mayor Hans-Josef Siebertz (CDU) receiving 38.9 percent of the votes as well as Ferdinand Gatzweiler receiving 41.9% which is why a run-off vote was conducted. The second round of voting , on 10 October 2004 Gatzweiler was elected as mayor, with 58.7 percent.

In Stolberg, Gatzweiler was the third of three children. In the following years, after attending a Volksschule Gatzweiler attended the Goethe-Gymnasium. After passing the 11th grade, he entered an administrative job in the town of Stolberg in 1973. In 1987 after having obtained an Diplom in Public Administration and Public administration, he was appointed deputy director of the Agency for Sports, School Administration, and Culture, later becoming the Department Head in 1993. The year 2001 was the time he was appointed to his city’s Jugendamt.
In 1982 Gatzweiler is married since 1982 to Brigitte Gatzweiler and with whom has a son.
In 2014, Gatzweiller lost his bid for reelection to the CDU candidate, Tim Grüttemeier.
