Felix Van Groeningen is one of the most popular and richest Film Director who was born on November 1, 1977 in Ghent, Flemish Region, Belgium. Felix van Groeningen (born 1 November 1977) is an Belgian screenwriter and film director. He is famous as the director of The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012) and Belgica (2016) The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012), which resulted in the latter being nominated as Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards. His first English-language film came out with the biographical film Beautiful Boy (2018).

His third feature film, The Misfortunates (Dutch: De Helaasheid der Dingen) (2009), was a film adaptation the 2006 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Dimitri Verhulst. This film follows story of the protagonist at thirteen, Gunther who lives with a family of misfits and alcoholics as he grows up , and desires to be an author. The film debuted at Cannes Film Festival in the Director’s Fortnight section and won the Prix Art et Essai. This film became a box-office hit across Belgium with 454,435 admissions into cinemas. It was also among the highest-rated Flemish film in Belgium. The film was chosen to be one of the Belgian film to be a finalist in the category of Best Foreign Language Film at the 1982 Academy Awards.

His fifth feature film, Belgica (2016), follows the lives of two brothers who start a nightclub but quickly gets swept up in hedonistic pursuits. The film was based upon two real-life brothers who bought ‘The Charlatan’, a music club owned by his father, in 2000 and managed it for seven years. The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival where he won the Best Director prize in the World Cinema Dramatic section. The film received mixed reviews from critics but was praised for the soundtrack created by the Flemish band Soulwax, who had previously collaborated with Van Groeningen on Steve + Sky.

Van Groeningen made his English-language debut with the film Beautiful Boy (2018), which he directed and co-wrote, and which stars Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet.

After graduating from college van Groeningen helmed a few short films. He also wrote and directed various stage plays. He started an ongoing partnership along with Dirk Impens, originally his professor at KASK and who directed the five Van Groeningen feature films between 2004 and 2016 , under the Production company Menuet. Impens announced that he was shutting the doors of Menuet in July of 2017.

It it starred Titus De Voogdt and Delfine Bafort in the title roles. Van Groeningen later explained that”the movie “was about realizing that you’re not invincible or immortal” following an epiphany at the age of 23 after his father passed away because of complications from the liver transplant, and also when he lost a acquaintance to the disease. The second film he made, With Friends Like These (Dutch: Dagen zonder lief) (2007) is comedy that tells the tale of a struggling group of young people who find themselves in uncertainty when their friend is returned to New York.

His fourth feature film, The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012), starred Johan Heldenbergh and Veerle Baetens as Didier and Elise, a bohemian couple that loses their daughter to cancer. It is an adaptation of a stage play originally written and directed by Heldenbergh. The film was a critical and commercial success, and became the most watched Flemish film in Belgium of the year. The film was selected as the Belgian entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards, and was on the nominated shortlist. He was invited to become a member of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2014.
