On the 9th of November 2007, the Turkish chief prosecutor began an inquiry into the actions following her visit to Iraq together with two other DTP politicians to seek the freedom of 8 Turkish soldiers who were held by Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) troops. The prosecutor demanded to have the Turkish Parliament revoke the immunity granted by the parliament to all three MPs.

Kurtulan then became a member of with the Democratic Society Party (DTP). She is the current the MP for Van.
