On the 9th of November 2007, the Turkish chief prosecutor began an inquiry into the actions following her visit to Iraq together with two other DTP politicians to seek the freedom of 8 Turkish soldiers who were held by Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) troops. The prosecutor demanded to have the Turkish Parliament revoke the immunity granted by the parliament to all three MPs.

Formerly, she was the president of the women’s section of the People’s Democracy Party (HADEP) In July 2007 Kurtulan was an independent candidate in Turkish elections for parliament and was elected to in the Turkish Parliament (Grand Turkish National Assembly). Kurtulan then became a member of with the Democratic Society Party (DTP). She is the current the MP for Van.
