He started with the junior leagues of France and then made his debut as a professional in the Scottish First Division club Falkirk in which the striker scored 27 goals in 43 games during his one season at the club.
The 6th August 2013 El Alagui began his 2013-14 season when he came on as an substitution to Emmanuel Oyeleke in the 54th minute of an League Cup first round match against Dagenham & Redbridge and scored two goals that helped Brentford to an extra-time win of 3-2. El Alagui scored a crucial goal in injury time to earn the 1-1 draw against Gillingham on the 17th of August, 2013. He scored two goals during the 5-3 Brentford Football League Trophy first round victory against AFC Wimbledon on 3 September. In November, having played in just three of his 12 appearances in his 2013-14 campaign, El Alagui expressed his displeasure that he was unable to get his foot in Uwe Rosler’s squad. El Alagui scored an impressive sixth strike of the campaign in the three-goal FA Cup second round defeat to Carlisle United on 7 December. The news reports emerged in mid-December that prior to the end of his tenure as manager, Rosler approved El Alagui’s move to Scottish Premiership club Partick Thistle for a loan deal in January 2014. However, El Alagui denied the reports and reiterated his loyalty to Brentford. El Alagui’s last game for the Bees was in the 3-1 win over Milton Keynes Dons on 29 December, when he replaced Marcello Trotta after an 81-minute period. El Alagui made 18 appearances and scored six goals in this season. El Alagui played in 30 games and scored nine goals in the two seasons he played for the club. His period with the Bees mostly impacted due to knee injuries he sustained in October of 2012.
On 8 January 2014, El Alagui moved to Scottish Premiership club Dundee United on loan until the end of the 2013–14 season. He made his debut against Inverness CT in a 1–1 draw, after coming on as a substitute for the injured Brian Graham, on 12 January. El Alagui scored his first goal for the club, in a 1–1 draw with Partick Thistle on 1 February 2014. He finished the season having scored three goals in 15 appearances and, as he had been previously released by Brentford a week before his loan spell had finished, he left and became a free agent.
Complications from the earlier surgery meant that El Alagui did not play for Hibs during the early part of the 2015–16 season, and at the end of his contract he was released by the club. Subsequently, El Alagui appeared as a trialist for Inverness CT and Dunfermline Athletic.
League One club Brentford signed El Alagui on the 3rd of July 2012, signing a two-year agreement that fended off the interest of St Johnstone, Kilmarnock, numerous Championship clubs, as well as international clubs. Following his move to Brentford, El Alagui said that he rejected the offers of two SPL clubs due to the fact that the manager Uwe Rosler convinced the player to move to Brentford. El Alagui started his career playing in amateur leagues in his home country of France and was able to earn a living in the clubs of FC Marmande 47 and Bergerac Foot. He joined Moroccan top-flight club Wydad Casablanca in 2009 and won the 2009-10 league title during his first season at the club. In 2010 He returned to France and signed with CFA team SO Romorantin.
The first time he played for the first team was on July 23, 2011 in the 2-1 victory of Falkirk over Brechin City in the Scottish Challenge Cup. El Alagui scored his first goal for Falkirk in the 4-2 win away over Albion Rovers on 30 July. In January, during the period of transfer, El Alagui was linked to a variety of clubs in England and the United Kingdom, including clubs like Crawley Town, who made an offer twice, but was denied from Steven Pressley, describing the offer as ‘deplorable’. Farid El Alagui was famous with the Falkirk supporters by “Kissing the Coin” after every goal, with the lucky coin kept by the staff in the backroom at the touchline. In April 12, 2012, he boosted his standing with Falkirk supporters after winning the Scottish Challenge Cup he jumped into the crowd to be a part of the celebration by embracing the cheers. He was second scoring player in Scottish football during the 2011-12 season in the 2011-12 season, with Gary Hooper scoring one more goal. Because of his outstanding year, Farid became a cult fan favourite among Falkirk supporters. After this season El Alagui (along with Michael McGovern, a teammate) was nominated as the PFA First Division Player of the Year. The award was presented to El Alagui subsequently won. He was awarded the award. Alagui was also included as a member of the PFA First Division Team of the Year. He played 43 games with 27 scoring goals in his one season at the club. He left in July of 2012.
El Alagui signed a two-year contract with Scottish Championship club Hibernian in July 2014. He scored his first goal for the club on 9 August 2014, in a 2–1 home win against Livingston in the opening league match of the season. He scored again in the following match, the Edinburgh derby against Hearts on 17 August 2014, although it was only a consolation goal as Hibernian lost 2–1. On 30 August 2014, El Alagui had to go off injured in the first half as Hibernian lost 2–1 against Alloa Athletic, with the club fearing he had a ruptured an achilles’ tendon. He then had surgery on the injury and it was expected he would be out for four to six months. On his return from injury, El Alagui came on as a substitute in an Edinburgh derby against Hearts. He scored in the dying minutes to wrap up a 2–0 victory for Hibernian.
