In Aigle in the United States to an American father and an English mother Smith was raised at Aigle, which is a Swiss Ski resort Villars. Smith began skiing at she was two and at the age of 14 , she was accepted into the Swiss National Educational Performance Center in Brig. After she finished her studies in 2009, the country had no Swiss junior cross-country ski programme, so with the help of sponsors and family, Smith created her own program. Smith began training together with Guillaume Nantermod, the Bordercross World Champion and, when their collaboration immediately started to show signs of great success, they were accepted in the Swiss National Team.

At the age of 17, Smith secured her first World Cup podium position, having finished second in the Lake Placid World Cup in January of 2010. Her first victory came one year later, in the San Candido/Innichen. She came in for two second places during the season 2010-11, but she was injured when she fell and tore the anterior cruciate ligament making her ineligible to compete until 11 months.
