On August 8, 2011 Freij was named Chief of Staff for the Syrian Arab Army during the Syrian civil conflict. As of December 11, defections of Syrian Army officers revealed they had been informed that before his selection as Chief of Staff al-Freij was the commander of his Syrian Army Special Forces throughout the areas that included Daraa, Idlib and Hama during the Syrian uprising.
