Joshua Leary (born 11 June 1989) more popularly known by Evian Christ, the screen name Evian Christ is an English electronic music DJ, producer, and performer who hails from Ellesmere Port, UK. He is contracted to Tri Angle Records and to Kanye West’s publishing company, DONDA. The mixtape he released was his debut Kings and Them in 2012 and was a major partner on Kanye West’s Yeezus album in 2013. He released another album with the label Tri Angle, Waterfall, in 2014.

Leary dropped his first EP, Waterfall, in March 2014. Leary also announced plans for the follow-up album to Yeezus and held Trance parties throughout the UK. In 2015, he collaborated alongside art-maker David Rudnick to create a temporary art installation in London’s ICA and also increased his Trance Parties including the 4th edition being held on the streets of Liverpool, London and Sheffield.

In August 2016, Leary produced “Pneumonia,” the second single from rapper Danny Brown’s critically acclaimed fourth studio album, Atrocity Exhibition. The single was officially released on August 19 through Warp Records.

Leary grew up in the small town of Ellesmere Port, near Liverpool. He began making music after playing around with vintage keyboards belonging to his father, who initially made Kraftwerk-influenced synth music before becoming a trance DJ in the late ’90s. At 19 he produced a selection of J. Dilla- influenced soul edits, and intended to release them until the label he had partnered with went out of business. While training to be a primary school teacher at Edge Hill University, Leary produced the eight tracks that would make up his debut mixtape, Kings And Them. Made music in his garage on Cubase. In December 2011, he posted three of the tracks on YouTube under the name Evian Christ, apparently only for his friends to hear. They were discovered by Dummy Magazine and other music blogs, which led to a search for his identity.

In 2013 Kanye West approached Leary to help him create material for his upcoming album Yeezus. West took him to Paris to work with the in-house producers and engineers to make the album’s title single “I’m In It.” At the end of the year West has signed Evian Christ for his own publishing company, DONDA. In the same year Leary went to his first class at the Red Bull Music Academy in New York City.

When the tracks went up in flames, Leary responded to a message from Tri Angle Records founder Robin Carolan who has signed him for the record label. On February 12, 2012 Tri Angle released Kings And Them which was a no-cost mixtape that compiled his music so far. The following day, Leary made his live debut at an Tri Angle showcase in London along with Balam Acab, Romy xx as well as The Haxan Cloak. Following his graduation from his college program, Leary left the UK to perform in America. On July 12, 2012 Tri Angle rereleased Kings And Them as exclusive 12″ EP with remixes of mixtape tracks “Fuck It All of Y’All Don’t Rap,”” “Thrown Like Jacks,” “Drip,” and “MYD.”
