The year 2006 was the time Salas got selected out of an applicant pool of 99 for the position of U.S. Magistrate Judge of the District of New Jersey, becoming the first Latina in the position that she held over five years. On August 31, 2010 Senate members Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez announced that they would suggest to the President Barack Obama that Salas be nominated to the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey as judge. U.S. District Court judge. Obama announced her nomination on December 1st in 2010, for an office that was vacated by departing Katharine Sweeney Hayden. On June 14, 2011 it was announced that the Senate confirmed Salas as the first Latina to be confirmed on the District Court of New Jersey.

Esther Salas is from Monterey Park, California, and is the daughter of Cuban and Mexican immigrants. His father was Jewish while her mother Catholic. When she was five, she, along with her mother Aurelia Salas and her children, relocated into Union City, New Jersey in the area of 27th Street, and later, 15th Street and Bergenline Avenue. While she was unable to contact her father after moving away from to the West Coast, she would eventually reconnect with him in the the background check she went through when she was appointed an federal judge. Being a poor child, Salas remembers being required to translate for her mother in the Welfare office, and then helping her friends deal with the various issues that they faced and inspired her to pursue an occupation that focuses on human services. Salas was a student at Emerson High School, where her extracurricular activities included cheerleading. After graduation from the high school class of 1987, she enrolled at Rutgers University, where she did her dorm on campus as well as being active in various groups and activities. Salas completed her studies at Rutgers in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts and, in 1994, she graduated from Rutgers University School of Law at Newark with the Juris Doctor. She attributes her success in her academic career and later career due to Rutgers’ Minority Student Program.

After law school, Salas served as a law clerk for Eugene J. Codey Jr. who was the judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey. From 1995 until 1997 Salas was employed by Garces & Grabler, P.C. in which she handled criminal cases in the municipal and superior courts. Between 1997 and 2006, she was employed as an assistant Federal Public Defender in the District of New Jersey, representing defendants with disabilities in federal cases. Salas was President of The Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey as well as the Hispanic Bar Foundation of New Jersey. She also served as an active part of the Governor’s Hispanic Advisory Committee for Policy Development and the Supreme Court Committee on Minority Concerns and the Supreme Court Committee on Women in the Courts.

Judge Salas was the Judge responsible for the trial of Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice and her husband Giuseppe “Joe” Giudice. They were both sentenced for bank fraud on October 2, 2014.
