Esther Louise McVey (born 24 October 1967) is a British Conservative Party politician, serving as the Member of the Parliament (MP) in the constituency of Tatton from 2017. She was previously a member of the Cabinet as Minister of State for Housing and Planning from 2019 until 2020 as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions in 2018 and Minister of State for Employment between 2014 and 2015.
McVey McVey, who is of Irish Catholic descent, was born in Liverpool. She spent the beginning that she lived in foster homes as Barnardo’s baby. She attended the (at at the time fee-paying, independently owned) Belvedere School, before taking law classes in Queen Mary University of London (LLB) and radio journalism at City University London (MA). On July 9, 2009, she received her degree in 2009 from Liverpool John Moore University with the title of Master of Science in corporate governance.
McVey first entered parliament as the MP for Wirral West in the House of Commons at the 2010 general election. In the 2015 general election, she lost her seat and spent eighteen months serving as the Chair of the British Transport Police Authority before returning to parliament in the 2017 United Kingdom general election, succeeding former Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne in the Tatton constituency.
McVey said that there were problems with Universal Credit. The Guardian wrote, “Tens of thousands of ESA claimants will receive back-payments of £5,000–£20,000 as a result of what MPs have called a series of ‘avoidable’ mistakes. The DWP was warned of the error as early as 2014, but failed to take action until 2017.” Polly Toynbee wrote, “It’s no surprise that a minister who misleads parliament and thumbs her nose at the NAO is even more indifferent to the people who really matter – the millions suffering her department’s infliction of extreme hardship as they are transferred to UC.”
A steadfast supporter in Conservative Way Forward, a Thatcherite group, McVey was selected to be an official Conservative Party candidate in the general election of 2005 to the electorate of Wirral West but was defeated by the incumbent Labour MEP Stephen Hesford by 1,097 votes.

Shortly after being made Minister for Employment, McVey had the responsibility for the Health and Safety Executive taken away after it was reported that a demolition company had been found to be in violation of health and safety laws while she was director.
