Espen Barth Eide Biography

Espen Barth Eide is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on May 1, 1964 in Oslo, Norway. Eide has the father of jurist and human rights expert and writer Asbjorn Eide (b. 1933) and Professor of Nutritional biology Wenche Barth Eide (b. Barth 1935). He was a student at his studies at the Oslo Cathedral School and graduated from the University of Oslo in 1993 with the cand.polit. degree. He also attended his university, the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

In 2001 Eide was a Board member for the Party of European Socialists. He supervised an assessment of policy on integrated missions that was commissioned by UN Secretariat. Additionally, he served as an a consultant for the high-level panel on UN Reform, which concluded its work in the year 2005. He’s also been an active participant within The World Economic Forum since 2003.

During Jens Stoltenberg’s first term as Prime Minister, from 2000 to 2001, Eide served as a Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. When the Stoltenberg’s second cabinet took office after the 2005 elections, Eide became a Deputy Minister of Defense. In 2010 he again served as a Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. On 11 November 2011, he was appointed to the post of Minister of Defense. On 21 September 2012, he was appointed to the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs, succeeding Jonas Gahr Støre.

Eide served as Norway’s Minister of Defense in Stoltenberg’s Second Cabinet from 11 November 2011 to 21 September 2012, and subsequently as Minister of Foreign Affairs until 16 October 2013. Since December 2013, Espen Barth Eide has served as a member of the Board of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD) where he is currently Vice Chair of the Board and Chairman of the Operations Committee. He is also member of the boards of Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) and the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI).

Since 1993 Eide was hired as an analyst in the United Nations Program at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI). He became the head of the program in the year 1996, and later acting as an advisor for an advisory panel for Threats, Challenges and Change as well as the Report on Integrated Missions. In 2002, he was appointed the NUPI’s head. Department of International Politics, the position that he held until the year 2005.

Espen Barth Eide (born 1 May 1964 in Oslo) is an Norwegian Political scientist and politician. He is a member of the Norwegian Parliament for 2017-2021, which is his party, the Norwegian Labour Party. His election to this position during the Norwegian Parliamentary Election on 11 September 2017.

Eide was a member of The Labour Party in 1979 and in the 1980s held a variety of post as a member of AUF (Labour Party Youth). He was secretary general for the European Movement Norway in 1992 and played a significant part in the fight for Norwegian acceptance into the EU in 1994.

Eide was appointed as defense minister by Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg on 11 November 2011. Eide described his new position as “a great responsibility” and said he would not make “revolutionary changes.”
