Jahangiri was born the 21st of January, 1958, in Sirjan County, Kerman Province. He graduated from the University of Kerman with a degree in Physics. He was involved in revolutionary organizations in the years prior to his involvement in the Iranian Revolution and once was wounded by the forces of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. He then was awarded an Ph.D at Islamic Azad University, Science and Research Branch, Tehran in the field of industrial management. He has a wife named Manijeh Jahangiri. He has four children: Hossein, Hesam, Faezeh and Hoda.
In April of 2017 it was announced that Jahangiri was registering as a presidential candidate in this year’s Iranian Presidential elections. He was thoroughly scrutinized and accepted through the Guardian Council on 20 April 2017 and then officially became an official presidential candidate. Many saw his choice to run for president as a deliberate decision to back Rouhani during the debates, and then to withdraw before vote began. Jahangiri resigned on May 16 2017. Then, Hassan Rouhani won the election and Jahangiri was appointed as the his first vice-president.
Jahangiri was a reformist candidate for the 2013 presidential election however he resigned to support Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and then became the campaign manager of Rafsanjani. He was co-founder of the Executives of Construction Party and was its secretary-general from 2006 until 2010. He was also a part of Mir-Hossein’s campaign during the 2009 presidential election. On the 23rd of July, 2013 it was announced that Jahangiri was to be the next First Vice President. He will be named by Rouhani upon his official inauguration. On July 29 the official confirmation was made and pending his appointment to the position on the day of his inauguration. He was officially named on the 4th of August in the presence of Rouhani to be his initial vice-president, succeeding Mohammad-Reza Rahimi.

Eshaq Jahangiri Khouhshahi (Persian: sHq JHNGYRY khwhshh and pronounced as [es’ha’g dZaeha’s Ku:hSa:’hi] ; born on 21 January, 1958) is an Iranian politician and vice-president of the Hassan Rouhani government. Jahangiri was minister of mines and industry from 1997 until 2005 under the presidency of Mohammad Khatami. Prior to that, he served as the governor of the province of Isfahan. Also, he was a Parliamentary member in two different terms.
Jahangiri started his political career after Jahangiri’s political career began following the Iranian revolution. He was appointed deputy head of the department of agriculture at Kerman in July of 1980. He was then appointed the department’s director in 1982. Then, he was elected into the Iranian Parliament during the election of 1984. He also won re-election in the following elections. He was named governor of Isfahan on September 1, 1992 by Akbar Hashemi Raffsanjani to replace Gholamhossein Karbaschi. He was governor until the 20th of August in 1997, when he was appointed by Mohammad Khatami as the minister of mines and metals . His nomination was confirmed by Parliament. The portfolio then changed into minister of mines and industries and he remained in that post until the cabinet of President Ahmadinejad was appointed in 2005. In 2008, there was speculation that Jahangiri was planning to be a candidate for a seat in Parliament however, Jahangiri denied this.
On 4 March 2020, after the COVID-19 pandemic became known to have spread to Iran, the IranWire website reported that Jahangiri had been infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019. However, there was no immediate confirmation from Iranian officials. On 11 March, his infection was confirmed by semi-official Fars News Agency. On 15 March, his office announced that he “tested negative for coronavirus and since he has fully recovered, he returned to his office and resumed his job”.
