Esa Jouni Ollavi Saarinen (born 27th July, 1953 Hyvinkaa, Finland) is a Finnish philosopher and an applied philosopher professor at Aalto University and co- director of the Systems Intelligence Research Group.

Saarinen’s philosophy has changed drastically, from his the early writings on formal logic to his concerns with existentialism later on, and finally into media theory. It was 1994 that saw the release of his most well-known book, Imagologies: Media Philosophy that was written in collaboration along with American philosopher Mark C. Taylor.

Saarinen has been married for a while to Pipsa Pallasvesa. They have twins, Jerome and Oliver, born in 1989.

Since the turn of the century, Saarinen’s teaching has been focused around Helsinki University of Technology. Helsinki University of Technology, however, he also continues his work as a coach for Finnish organizations and companies and has promoted a philosophy of self-actualization. The book that was written to mark his 60th birthday featured contributions from a variety of notable faculty members such as Ilkka Niiniluoto as well as business leaders like Jorma Olla and Matti Alahuhta.

Saarinen finished the Ph.D. degree in 1978 at the University of Helsinki, where the docent has held his position since then. His exuberant personality was a major reason why he was dubbed”the “punk doctor” – was evident in his university lectures and attracted increasing audiences throughout the 1990s. After failing to be offered the full-time position of a professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Helsinki, Saarinen quit his lecturer post. In the following months, he was made Professor at Helsinki University of Technology, which was later it was renamed Aalto University. The lectures he gives there every year attract large lecture halls.

Esa Saarinen was stabbed with a knife by a student outside a lecture hall in March 2014. He survived without life-threatening injuries.
