In the beginning of the 1970s, together with Gregory Isaacs, he formed the African Museum record label. Isaacs quickly took over the sole control of the label and Dunkley established Silver Ring, a new label. The year 1972 saw him joined alongside his producer Jimmy Radway for two of his most popular songs, “Keep the Pressure Down” and “Black Cinderella”. In the same year, he also announced the release of his debut album Presenting Errol Dunkley with producer Sonia Pottinger, which included the song “A Little Way Different”.

Dunkley’s career in recording began in 1965, at the age of 14years old, with “Gypsy” (a duet with Roy Shirley) for Linden Pottinger’s Gaydisc label, “My Queen” (with Junior English) for Prince Buster as well as “Love Me Forever” on the Rio label. From 1967 to 1968 Dunkley recorded numerous singles with Joe Gibbs, including “Please Stop Your Lying” (1967) and “Love Brother” (1968) prior to changing to Coxsone Dodd in 1969.
Dunkley continued to release music throughout the 1970s and towards the close of the decade, his acclaim in the UK was growing, leading to an unexpected UK Singles Chart hit in 1979 with “OK Fred”, a cover version of a track composed by John Holt, that reached the 11th position. His 1980 album “Sit Down And Cry” also made it to the charts.
