Ernst Strasser was born in 1956, one of the children of farmers of Upper Austria. After attending the elementary school in Grieskirchen in Austria, he was a student at in the “Bundesgymnasium und Sportrealgymnasium HIB Saalfelden” and then the higher school called “BORG Grieskirchen”, where it was in 1975 that he graduated as school spokesperson. In the years between 1971 and 1975, he was a participant in Catholic youth groups in Grieskirchen. Ernst Strasser studied Jurisprudence at the University of Salzburg between 1975 until 1980, and was awarded with a Doctor in Laws at the age of 1981. While he was a student, he was an active member of the principal committee of the student union of the University of Salzburg as well as a social reference for the same organization. From 1980 until 1981, his community service was an alternate to his military duty.

After completing his military duty, Ernst Strasser began his career as secretary for the Austrian Farmer Association under director who was then Josef Riegler. After that, he joined an office in the department for legal at the U.S. Farmers’ Association which he later took over the role of federal minister two years after. Following his election as Josef Riegler to the leader of the Austrian People’s Party, Ernst Strasser was his successor and served as the office manager for the chairman from 1990.

From December 2002 to April 2003 Ernst Strasser was member of the National Council of the Austrian People’s Party. He was Federal Minister of the Interior of Austria between 2000 and 2004.

In addition he was representative of Lower Austria on the “ORF Board of Trustees”. Strasser has also been the president of the Austro-Russian Friendship Society (Österreichisch-Russische Freundschaftsgesellschaft) since 2003.

From 1990 until 1991, He was the head of strategic planning at Umdasch AG in Amstetten and in 1991 until 1992, he was managing director of Shop Concept Mittelraum (Umdasch AG) in Heidelberg.
