Ernest James “Ernie” Istook Jr. (born on February 11 in 1950) is an ex- Republican representative in the United States House of Representatives from Oklahoma’s 5th congressional District. He served in the congressional seat over 14 years serving seven years within the House. Presently, Istook is a Distinguished Fellow at The Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. as well as also hosts a radio talk show. In 2010 Istook was named an Fellow of The Harvard Kennedy School leading a research project on Propaganda in American Politics.

Istook also served as director for The Oklahoma State Alcoholic and Beverage Control Board (1977-1978), was the legal counsel for the popular Oklahoma governor David L. Boren (1978) as well as an officer of Oklahoma County Metropolitan Library System (1982-1986) and chairperson of the Warr Acres City Council (1982-1986) as well as director of the Warr Acres Chamber of Commerce and an Oklahoma state representative from 1987 to 1993.

In the 1992 Republican primary, Istook challenged and defeated incumbent Deputy House Minority Whip Mickey Edwards in a three-way primary that also featured former federal prosecutor Bill Price. Both Istook and Price used Edwards’ involvement in the House banking scandal to chip away at his support.

Istook narrowly defeated his Democratic challenger, Laurie Williams, in November, winning by only six points. He never faced another contest nearly that close, and was reelected six more times from what has long been considered the most Republican district in Oklahoma. The Democrats didn’t even put up a candidate against him in 1994.

He was a full-time reporter for radio news at first KOMA (now KOKC) and later in WKY at Oklahoma City while attending law school. He earned an law degree from Oklahoma City University School of Law in the year 1976. He was also an active member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Following graduation, he founded an own firm in law and was a lawyer for 15 years.
