Erma-Gene was an CARIFTA bronze medallist from 2001. She then became silver medalist in the year 2002, and her final year as an junior. However, when she competed at the Pan American Junior Track & Field Championships held in Bridgetown, Barbados, she achieved a meet record as well as a the national mark of 49.67 to claim the gold medal. For her efforts she was named the in 2003 as the senior and junior female Athlete of the Year in St. Lucia as well as the senior and junior Sporting Woman of the Year.
In 2004, Erma-Gene picked her studies to UTEP and began her training alongside her coach Mika Laaksonen. She finished second in the javelin (48.86/160-4) at the 2004 North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Championships on 30 July. As of 2005, her score was 52.27 was the highest throw she made in her flight during the qualification round for the NCAA Championships, but she could not compete in the final due to injuries. She finished second in the NCAA Midwest Regional, and at the WAC Championships. She set the Saint Lucia national record by winning the Spira Invitational with a record-setting 172-110 (52.68) on the 16th of April 16 and was awarded the WAC athlete of the Week. She previously broke the record for the nation with an average at 172-8 (52.64) to place fourth place at the Texas Relays on April 9.
Her senior year at UTEP was eventful. Erma-Gene won the C-USA Conference title with a new national record of 56.45m, qualifying her for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. At the 2007 NCAA Championships she finish ed second.
