Erion Veliaj is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on December 17, 1979 in Tirana, Albania. Erion Veliaj was born 17 December 1979. He was born in Tirana, Albania. He was the son of Luan Veliaj. Luan Veliaj was an Officer of Albania’s Albanian Army, while his mother worked as an HR Manager for the military. He was a student at an institution called the “Sami Frasheri” High School in Tirana and later Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan where he was awarded the degree of a B.A. with a major in Political Science. He earned his master’s qualification on European Integration from the University of Sussex. Prior to his return in Albania, Veliaj worked with various international organizations for humanitarian assistance across Eastern Africa, the Americas, Eastern Africa, and Kosovo.

In an email addressed to EU representatives in 2011, the EU representative. Veliaj briefed them on the alleged political motived kidnapping of the Kavaja’s mayor’s wife Griselda Roshi, that is believed to have led to the forced abortion. He attributed the kidnapping to the reality the mayor Elvis Roshi had been able to turn around a district such as Kavaja which has typically voted for the DPA. The story was discredited after Roshi’s revelations. Roshi revealed to Albanian authorities that she had invented her kidnapping, and that she was not pregnant. At a meeting in 2011 on Human Rights in Albania MEP Tanja Fajon cited this exaggerated story as an instance. She later apologized , and stated that the Mr. Veliaj never updated her on the story. The controversy has raised grave concerns about the Mr. Veliaj’s use fake media along with personal contacts to influence high-ranking EU officials.

The issue of urban air pollution is a growing concern in Tirana, and the role of the car can be controversial. In September 2015, Tirana organized its first vehicle-free day. In January 2017 the new Skanderbeg Square was inaugurated by Veliaj and the Prime Minister. In July 2017 the Municipality of Tiranë voted to raise the water tariff significantly, Veliaj promoted this action by arguing that it would eventually make drinking water available 24 hours a day, and help improve its access and quality. During his term as Mayor, he has earned the nickname ‘Lali Eri’, which can be translated as Dude Eri.

Previously he has served as a Member of the Parliament for the district of Gjirokastër and as Minister of Social Welfare and Youth under Prime Minister Edi Rama. In April 2015, Veliaj was appointed as mayoral candidate of the Socialist Party in the city of Tirana. He won the elections and took office on July 31, 2015.

The year 2008 was the time that Erion Veliaj along with a couple of other MJAFT! activists MJAFT! formed G99 (Group 99), an opposition political party of the center-left. Although it was initially not aligned, G99 ended up joining other political parties in the center-left coalition during 2009. Erion Veliaj (born on 17 December 1979) is an Albanian politician who is currently the 42nd mayor of Tirana. Originating from a civil society activism group as the head MJAFT! MJAFT!, Veliaj joined the ranks of the Socialist Party of Albania in 2011 when the party appointed him Secretary for Youth and Immigration.

Veliaj was elected Mayor of Tirana with 53.58% of the vote, defeating Democratic Party’s candidate, Halim Kosova and the independent candidate, Gjergj Bojaxhi.
