Erik Verlinde is one of the most popular and richest Dutch physicist who was born on January 21, 1962 in Woudenberg, Utrecht, Netherlands. Erik Verlinde was born in the Dutch village of Woudenberg on January 21, 1962, along alongside his brother who was identical Herman Verlinde. He attended school in the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and completed his gymnasium studies in the year 1980.
It is believed that the Cardy formula is a significant result of conformal field theories which allows computation of the entropy for one dimension of conformal field theory. By using the AdS/CFT correspondence between conformal fields theories as well as quantum gravity within anti-de Sitter space with an additional dimension, it is possible in calculating (the quantum corrections that are applied to) the black hole’s entropy over 2+1 dimensions. The year 2000 saw Verlinde added conformal fields theories with dimensions of any size, allowing for the calculation of the entropy of black holes of any dimension.
At a symposium at the Dutch Spinoza-institute on 8 December 2009 he introduced a theory of entropic gravity. In this theory, gravity exists because of a difference in concentration of information in the empty space between two masses and its surroundings; he also extrapolates this to general relativity and quantum mechanics. He said in an interview with the newspaper de Volkskrant, “On the smallest level Newton’s laws don’t apply, but they do for apples and planets. You can compare this to the pressure of a gas. Molecules themselves don’t have any pressure, but a barrel of gas has.” It appears that Verlinde’s approach to explaining gravity leads naturally to the correct observed strength of dark energy.
In June 2011, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) awarded Verlinde the Spinoza Prize, the highest award available to Dutch scientists including a 2.5 million euro grant for future research. The committee cited his work on the Verlinde formula, the Witten–Dijkgraaf–Verlinde–Verlinde equations, the Cardy-Verlinde formula and entropic gravity as the major achievements leading to the award.
Following his PhD, Verlinde joined the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton as postdoctoral research fellow. The year 1993 was the time he joined on the staff permanent of the theory department of CERN located in Geneva. At the age of 34, He was made a the full professor for theoretical Physics within Utrecht University. Just a couple of years later, in the year 1999 the year he was transferred to Princeton University to take up the position of professor there. In 2003 He came back to Netherlands to take on the position of an instructor in the group on string theory which is headed by Robbert Dijkgraaf, a professor at The University of Amsterdam.

Erik Peter Verlinde (Dutch: [‘e:rIk’pe:t@r v@r’l born on 21 Jan 1962) is a Dutch theoretical physicist as well as string theorist. Verlinde is identical to the twin brothers of the physicist Herman Verlinde. The Verlinde formula that is crucial to conformal theory as well as topological field theory is named in his honor. His research focuses on string theory and black holes, gravity and the cosmology. He is currently working in the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Amsterdam.
The year 1985 was the time that Verlinde was working for her PhD from Utrecht University under the formal supervision of Bernard de Wit. He continued working alongside Herman and Dijkgraaf In practice, the trio was supervised by themselves. The initial arrangement was that just one of the trio was working on the burgeoning field of string theory but ultimately they all completed their thesis on the issue. In September 1988, Erik was defending his PhD thesis, which contained his Verlinde formula.
In 2009, Verlinde showed that the laws of gravity may be derived by assuming a form of the holographic principle and the laws of thermodynamics. This may imply that gravity is not a true fundamental force of nature (like e.g. electromagnetism), but instead is a consequence of the universe striving to maximize entropy.
