Eric Thor Olson (born January 24 1952) is a retired United States Navy admiral who was the 8th Commander of U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) from July 2 to August 8, 2011. He was previously Vice Commander, U.S. Special Operations Command from 2003 until July 2007. Olson is the very first Navy SEAL ever promoted to the three-star and 4-star status, and was also the first officer from the Navy to serve as the USSOCOM’s combatant command. Olson took over from Army general Bryan D. Brown in 2007. Brown and Olson worked together in the SOCOM Headquarters at Tampa over the course of four years. Olson took off from active duty the 22nd of August, 2011 following more than 38 years of service. He handed over the command of SOCOM to Admiral William H. McRaven the same day.

In addition to being the first three and four star Navy SEAL, Admiral Olson was the Bull Frog, the longest serving Navy SEAL still on duty. At four-star flag rank, Olson was the highest-ranking Navy SEAL to hold the Bull Frog title. He was succeeded by Commander Brian Sebenaler and Admiral William McRaven, who had also succeeded him as Commander of the United States Special Operations Command and himself retired in 2014.
Olson has been involved in a variety of conflicts and contingency missions, and was an SEAL platoon commander BUD/S instructor officer, the officer for strategy and tactics development and the staff officer for joint special operations. Some of his overseas duties include serving as an United Nations military observer in Israel and Egypt and as Navy Programs officer in Tunisia. Olson was the commander for SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team ONE from 1989 until 1990. Olson served as a member of the Navy staff as the assistant director of Naval Operations (Plans, Policy and Operations). The chief of the entire group Navy SEALs in Desert Storm, Ray Smith was the one who chose Olson to join his staff. From August 1991 to August 1993 Olson headed Special Boat Squadron TWO before returning to DEVGRU. In October 1993 Olson was a participant in the battle of Mogadishu which he later given the Silver Star for his actions that were highlighted “… in combat during the Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia, in October 1993. While under intense attack from the enemy during actions in assistance to UNOSOM II operations, Captain Olson displayed a total disregard for his own safety while executing his task”. The year 1994 saw Olson assumed the position of commander for the Naval Special Warfare Development Group which is an American anti-terrorism unit. Olson was promoted in 1999 after which Olson assumed the command of Naval Special Warfare Command in Coronado, California until August 2002, when he had to be relieved from his post by Rear-Admiral Albert M. Calland III.
