Eric Schadt is one of the most popular and richest Mathematician who was born on January 31, 1965 in St. Joseph, United States. Eric Emil Schadt (born January 31st 1965) is an American mathematician and computational biologist. He is Dean of Precision Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Chief Executive Officer of Sema4 an outgrowth of Sema4, a new generation health information company within the Mount Sinai Health System that offers advanced genomic testing and integrates big data analytics and clinical diagnostics. He was the former director of the Icahn Institute for Genomics and Multiscale Biology and the chair of the Department of Genetics and Genomics Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Schadt’s research combines advanced computational modeling and supercomputing with a variety of biological data to study the relationships between genes and their products, as well as other molecular components like organs, cells and communities, as well as their effect on human characteristics like diseases. He has been known for his call for an evolution in molecular biology to a network-based perspective of living systems that will supplement the single- gene, reductionist models that dominate biology today to better understand the complex biological systems. Schadt has also sought to reach out to the general public by encouraging them to be involved in research and helping them to understand the privacy implications of DNA-based information.

In 2009, along with Stephen Friend, Schadt founded Sage Bionetworks, a nonprofit organization with the goal of encouraging collaboration between academic and commercial scientists in performing network-based studies of disease and making the data publicly available. When Merck closed down the Rosetta business unit, it donated the data, research, and computer equipment from that unit to Sage Bionetworks. Schadt remains involved as a board member.

In 2011, Schadt joined the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, where he founded the new Icahn Institute for Genomics and Multiscale Biology and became chair of the Department of Genetics and Genomics Sciences. The new institute was launched with $100 million for the first five years and is co- directed by Andrew Kasarskis. Schadt has said that his interest in joining Mt. Sinai was to bring predictive modeling of biology to patients. In his time at the institute, he has opened the first CLIA-certified next-generation sequencing lab in New York City and established the first class at the school in which students sequence their own genomes. Schadt also serves on the executive committee of the New York Genome Center.

In 1999, following his becoming familiar by Stephen Friend, he was appointed chief scientist of Rosetta Inpharmatics, a startup biotech firm that focuses on the creation and analysis of functional genomics with high-dimensional data. Merck bought Rosetta during 2001. The acquisition enabled Schadt to integrate massive molecular profiling along with Merck’s database of disease- specific databases to prove how molecular systems working together to produce complex system behaviour. At this time, Schadt formulated his hypothesis that the single-gene approach to understanding and treating human ailments should be replaced by an approach based on networks and that a lot of errors in pharmaceutical treatments resulted from a lack of understanding of the biology behind the therapeutic targets.

When Schadt was in 1983, he quit the school in early order to join with the United States Air Force and was a part of an Special Operations/Rescue unit. After suffering a severe shoulder injury that required reconstructive surgery Schadt was accepted into California Polytechnic State University on an award from the military to pursue a degree in computer science and mathematics and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in applied Mathematics in the year 1991. He earned the master’s in pure math from the University of California, Davis in 1993. Following that the student was able to pursue an PhD on biomathematics, at the University of California, Los Angeles and was required to pursue PhD candidacy in biomathematics and molecular biology, receiving his doctorate under direction by Ken Lange in 2000. In the course of his PhD research, Schadt was employed as an engineer in charge of software at UCLA Office of Academic Computing. After completing their PhD, Schadt joined Roche Bioscience in 1998 as a senior researcher and began work on DNA microarrays. He devised new methods for processing and interpreting the data. He published his first algorithms that he independently developed to process the data from the gene chip work, which he later used to develop an early full genomic functional annotation for the genome of humans.

Also in 2009, Schadt joined DNA sequencing company Pacific Biosciences as the chief scientific officer. During his time there, Schadt demonstrated the application of SMRT sequencing technology for various applications, including to sequence bacterial genomes of public health concern to provide real-time information about these pathogenic strains during an active outbreak. He led research projects to resolve the origins of the Haitian cholera outbreak strain from 2010 and to characterize the highly virulent German E. coli outbreak strain in the summer of 2011. He also demonstrated the ability to infer epigenetic changes from the sequencing data, uncovering novel regulatory mechanisms that may impact pathogenicity and virulence of bacteria of concern in public health.

Demonstrating the ability to infer causal relationships among features in high dimensional data using DNA variation information, Schadt and his colleagues at Merck began reconstructing predictive networks that were shown to be causally associated with disease, leading to the idea of targeting networks, not single genes, to effectively treat common disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, obesity, and most forms of cancer. A Merck spokesman said that the papers Schadt began publishing based on this genetic network data “changed the way people looked at disease.” Schadt used the information about these networks to determine which genes Merck should pursue as targets; by the time he left the company, Schadt estimated that his group was responsible for half the drugs in the company’s development pipeline.
