Eric Mazur is one of the most popular and richest Physicist who was born on November 14, 1954 in Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands. Eric Mazur (born November 14 1954) is a physicist as well as an instructor in the department of Physics at Harvard University, and an Entrepreneur in start- ups of technology that target the education and technology markets. Mazur’s interests lie in the field of experimental ultrafast optics and condensed matter physical sciences. He was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, he completed his graduate and undergraduate diplomas in Leiden University.

The year 1991 was when Mazur started developing an instructional method for teaching , which he called peer instruction. He released the book Peer Instruction A User’s Handbook that provides more details about the strategy.

Peer Instruction (PI) has been found to be more beneficial than class-wide discussion or lecture. In fact, according to an article in the March/April 2009 edition of Complexity, over 90% of instructors who have tried PI plan to continue to use it and incorporate it more into teaching. The seating arrangement plays an important role in the outcome of this method. For example, when low-performing students are seated in the front, their chance to do better increases. Meanwhile, the results of high-performing students who are seated in the back are not affected. In addition, when high-performing students are seated in the outer four corners of the classroom, the performance of the class as a whole increases.

Mazur has founded or co-founded at least two technology start-ups: SiOnyx, which makes infrared sensors, and Learning Catalytics, which in April 2013 he sold to the Pearson educational corporation.

His early research at Harvard was focused on the application of short-pulse lasers in order for spectroscopy of extremely vibrating molecules. Mazur and his team have made a number of pioneering advancements in the area of ultrashort lasers as well as their interaction with matter (“femtosecond research in material sciences”). In 1989, his group was among the first researchers in academia to develop a colliding-pulse mode locked laser, that generated pulses with only 70 femtoseconds duration. Following initial tests of Mazur’s lab proved that solids are able to be subject to a structural phase shift without significant heat to the structure of their lattice Mazur’s team developed a method to assess the complete dielectric properties of high- excited semiconductors. Since then, the group has made application of this technique has included various optical probes nonlinear to examine laser- induced structural phase changes.

Eric Mazur is one of the richest Physicist from Netherlands. According to our analysis, Wikipedia, Forbes & Business Insider, Eric Mazur 's net worth $5 Million. (Last Update: December 11, 2023)

Mazur studied astronomy and physics during his time at Leiden University. He completed an exam called the “doctoraal examen” (equivalent to an advanced qualification) in 1977, and then pursued his postgraduate studies in the same university. In 1981, he earned his Ph.D in a dissertation entitled “The structure of non-equilibrium angular momentum polarizations in polyatomic gases”. While he had planned to pursue work in industry at Philips N.V. in Eindhoven but he resigned from Europe upon the advice from his father Peter Mazur, to pursue a postdoctoral research with the recent Nobel winner Nicolaas Bloembergen at Harvard University.

In the following two years, as a postdoc Mazur was offered the position as an assistant professor in Harvard University. In 1987, he was elevated to associate professor and received tenure three years after in the year 1990. Mazur is currently an appointment as Balkanski Professor of Physics and Applied Physics jointly in the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Physics Department. He is also Director of Applied Physics.

In 1998 a serendipitous discovery in Mazur’s laboratory led to the development of a new method to form a silicon surface modification, called “black silicon” because of its very low reflectivity. After irradiation by a train of femtosecond laser pulses in the presence of a halogen containing gas, the surface of silicon develops a self-organized microscopic structure of micrometer-sized cones. The resulting material has many remarkable properties, such as an enhanced absorption that extends to the infrared below the band gap of silicon. The material has found commercial applications in a number of photodetectors.
