The doctor Dr. James Andrews performed the operation and found a complete length tear in the rotator Cuff which was a diagnosis that the Japanese medical staff and coaches overlooked. Hillman officially announced his retirement from the sport on April 19 in 2000.

Hillman played in high school at Homewood-Flossmoor, a suburb of Chicago He then played collegiately in Eastern Illinois University. He pitched the entire duration of his MLB professional career for the New York Mets (1992-1994). Following his MLB career began, he pitched in NPB between 1995 and 1998 for The Chiba Lotte Marines and the Yomiuri Giants. In 1997 Hillman was signed by his team, the Yomiuri Giants purchased his contract by signing Hillman to the $7.5 million two year agreement. The Giants were hoping that he would play a significant role in their pursuit of an Olympic title.
